there are no such thing as private accounts, only hidden accounts. their account is probably hidden for a reason. although I see no point at all in sending messages to someone if you are then going to hide your account unless of course they are being abusive. that way they get to be abusive, but you can't retaliate. if they actually want to speak to you properly, then hiding their profile is counter productive.
in either case I'd use it as a way of sorting out the wheat from the chaff.
