My first wife is an alcoholic.
As long as I was there, I was an enabler. Simply because I would pick her up when she fell.
After I finally left her, she was able to hit her personal bottom and stopped drinking for at least a while.
She will always be an alcoholic, on or off the wagon is her choice.
She will never share my bed again. MY CHOICE.
If you are part of his enabling mechanism, he will never be able to straighten up as long as you are there to pick up the pieces.
Take a hard assessment. If this is the case, the best thing you could do for each other is walk.
