I know a pediatric neurologist with severe ADHD. He took the meds when in school but doesn't use them anymore. However he sure isn't secretive about it. In fact, it's how he connects with his patients by sharing his story. He is the role model for them. And although his specialty is pediatrics, one third of his patients are the adult parents who see their kids succeeding and realize that they too need help. In AA they say that you're only as sick as your secrets. So I'm having trouble with the idea that someone who is helping others cope and not be ashamed of their illness was secretly ashamed and not open. My daughter won't go off her pills, she cycled every five minutes before finding the right combo. In 13 years, she's not needed to be readmitted to a psych ward. Now, if she'd stop changing grad school majors every year and figure out what she wants to do, then I'd be happy.
