Johnathan Chait is occassionally interesting and his introspection on liberals fascination with rascism was a worth a read.

It also prompted a pretty good conservative response here: http://thefederalist.com/2014/05/02/why-liberals-think-conservatives-are-racist/. First few paragraphs are slow..

Perhaps if racists stoped being racist then the libs couldn't play the race card.

Interesting. However, I couldn't help thinking, as I was reading the article, that another possible reason for liberals' view that that there's a racist tendency amongst conservatives is because there's a racist tendency amongst conservatives.

Tkman117 -> RE: Liberal delusions on racism (5/3/2014 12:58:00 PM)

No that can't possibly be true, it would once again shake Phydeaux's very understanding of "reality" [8|]

Linking to garbage doesn't make you look bookish or informed.

How cute. If only it were conservatives that were racist.

The best study over the last few years is the one that concluded that the majority of blacks, ya know that super conservative demographic, saw blacks who have white friends as less black.

Not interesting. Pathetic and boring.

Is it your contention that there are no conservative bigots?

The best study over the last few years

Until you have linked us to this study this would simply be your ignorant unsubstatiated opinion.

Some blacks are conservative in some areas thus your claim is somewhat overbroad.

saw blacks who have white friends as less black.

Is that somehow functionally different than poles believing that poles who have non polish friends as being less polish?

I liked the article and I voted for Obama last time and it just goes to show never trust a creepy cracker.

kdsub -> RE: Liberal delusions on racism (5/3/2014 9:04:32 PM)

You can’t be a liberal and be a racist… you can call yourself a liberal and be a racists but you would be a liar.

You can be a racist and be conservative…or a conservative may not be a racist.

So which party gives you the better chance of being a racist?

Butch

Oh yeah. Liberals are, somehow, a cut above mortals.

In their own mind.

kdsub -> RE: Liberal delusions on racism (5/3/2014 9:46:17 PM)

Not at all...it is just the description of a state of mine... Anyone can call themselves anything... but that does not make it true. To be something you must abide by the description.

Hey... I'm not a liberal...but neither am I a racist. But I could be since I am not a liberal.

I'm not calling you a racist or anyone else I am just saying to be a true liberal you cannot be racist.

Butch

kdsub -> RE: Liberal delusions on racism (5/3/2014 9:54:51 PM)

Otherwise...many people call themselves liberal that are racist...but they are not liberals but liars. Hell No way is Jesse Jackson a true liberal for instance and neither is Nancy Pelosi... oops being an independent and saying that may make me racist... damn my head hurts.

MrBukani -> RE: Liberal delusions on racism (5/3/2014 10:49:14 PM)

What americans call liberal aint the definitive ruling on whats really liberal of course. Liberal is an augmentive of liberty wich has noting to do with being racist or not.

Given how much of the time I see "racism" accused, it's inaccurate with no actual racism present, I'm gonna have to say this is false, and that the view that there is a racist tendency among conservatives is due to an insidious form of prejudice equally as harmful as actual racism.

Sadly Ms Lu's paper is a mish mash of generalisations and facile straw man arguments. For Ms Lu, all liberals are of a single type, and all conservatives too are of a single type. One really expects better of a philosophy teacher.

Ms Lu's argument, such as it is, relies on a single assumption - that racism is "settled history":
"[.......] we see the Civil Rights story as settled history. We’re all pleased to have sloughed off the bigotry of our ancestors. Of course we want people to be judged “by the content of their character” and not by their skin”

There it is. If you agree that racism is "settled history", that it is no longer a blight upon society, that it isn't a force in political and social life any more, then you can read on and consider Ms Lu's argument on its merits. If you disagree, if you believe that racism is still a current factor in political and social life then you cannot accept Ms Lu's argument.

Is there any one out there stupid enough to carry on with the fiction that racism is a totally spent force and irrelevant to political and social life these days?

tweakabelle -> RE: Liberal delusions on racism (5/4/2014 1:12:26 AM)

What an appalling mish-mash of false generalisations and straw man arguments Ms Lu's paper is. One really expects better of a philosophy teacher.

Her argument, such as it is, relies on a single claim, the claim that racism is "settled history" ie no longer relevant in today's world. In Ms Lu's words:
"Conservatives tend to miss this because we see the Civil Rights story as settled history. We’re all pleased to have sloughed off the bigotry of our ancestors. Of course we want people to be judged “by the content of their character” and not by their skin"
http://thefederalist.com/2014/05/02/why-liberals-think-conservatives-are-racist/ (emphasis added)

So, if you believe Ms Lu, if you agree that racism is "settled history" and no longer a force in today's politics and social life, then read on and consider the rest of Ms Lu's paper on its merits. However, if you agree that racism is still a force to be reckoned with, that it is still operative in today's political and social worlds, then you must reject Ms Lu's claims in their entirety.

Is there any one out there stupid enough to believe that racism is a spent force, that it is irrelevant to today's political and social life? If there is I have a cool looking Harbour Bridge here in Sydney that I can let you have for a song. I'll even throw in the Opera House to sweeten the deal for you.
