Musicmystery -> RE: Is Country Music Dead, Is Keith Urban help to kill it? (5/12/2014 1:55:42 PM)

I can’t remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride, but something touched me deep inside the day the music died.

My point is, I should have made clear is, Jewell did not write that song.

But This Guy did write several he performed on Nashville Stars and seemed to be the real deal.

Plus, his smile, his personna was genuine compared to Buddy's. In my Humblest Opinion.

And why would that be of any import to anyone that doesn't like CW or Nashville Stars??

You are banging on about CW as if it was the only music in the world that matters.
To you, that may be the case. But you're in a small minority.
But for others that don't follow it, it's a case of DILLIGAF. [:D]

To be fair to the chap, it's hands down the most popular music in America (across the nation), and one of the two roots (blues is the other) of early rock.

And as they say . . .

"I like both kinds of music, Country AND Western . . . "

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Is Country Music Dead, Is Keith Urban help to kill it? (5/12/2014 2:17:19 PM)

Good point Muse.
But I don't believe that to be true of the US today.
Maybe 20 or 30 years ago, but not so much today.

Of all the people I chat to, across the globe as well as quite a few in the US, CW is not popular any more and hasn't been (except for a few die-hards) for quite some while.

Musicmystery -> RE: Is Country Music Dead, Is Keith Urban help to kill it? (5/12/2014 2:22:26 PM)

You don't have to "believe" it. It's reality.

It's still the most popular radio station format, followed by Contemporary Christian.

(that's including a lot of country cross-over into top 40 and rock formats).

And that's what he's bitching about - the rock element spoiling the music.
"He has pushed those artists who are country to apply themselves to Rock but he did not push the rockers to adapt to more pure or older forms of Country Music when it was their turn to sing CW."
He is under the delusion that because CW songsters are pushed towards rock (because that's where a lot of the popularity is across the globe and where they'd get more international recognition), that the rockers should also cross into CW in a sort-of tit-for-tat move.
Rockers get famous and earn money because globally, it is by far more popular than CW.
That's also why promoters try and push CW songsters into that field.
It's also why rockers don't get pushed into the CW field - loss of image and loss of earnings and stardom.

Incidentally, when I lived in the US, everyone I ever met hated CW and I never heard any on any radio station anywhere. So I'll have to take your word that it's popular because that wasn't my experience.

I get that, but he's whining about old news. People were whining about this in the 70s.

It didn't suddenly pop up with what's his name yesterday morning.

As for radio stations, you're speaking only anecdotally. There are more country stations than any other format. A lot of them are in rural areas.

Conversely, there are very few news/talk stations, but as they are in urban areas, those stations have more listeners.

In terms of record sales, rock sells best -- which is why country artists cross over. Country is second.

You are generalizing rock far too much.

There is:
Screamo
Black Metal
Death Metal
Classic Rock
Orchestral Rock
Folk Rock
Melodic Rock

etc and so on and so forth. Not all rock is screaching and howling, in fact A LOT of rock has very haunting and symphonic vocals and melodies.

Musicmystery -> RE: Is Country Music Dead, Is Keith Urban help to kill it? (5/12/2014 3:13:47 PM)

And Crocodile Rock.

Let's see, dead as a door nail, that is an idiom from ages past used by
a 'Brit', named Dickens, so

It is the Dickens to me who killed CW music.

Colonists used that idiom also. Haven't you read any books by the antiquarian Eric Sloan? He talked about the history of this phrase.

I'm not sure why you're pinning this on Keith Urban and his role on American Idol. That show and all the judging staff have always encouraged the singers to branch off into other genres of music to fit the "theme" of the night. In the past, they've had country music night where the rockers had to do country and the crooners have had to do rock, and so on. For the most part, the judges to me seem to be trying to help the singers get popular votes from "America" to win. So, they encourage them to do other styles of music than what they're used to. Then, if that doesn't go well, they tell them that they're not sure "who they are", and that they need to figure out who they are and focus on that style of music to be successful. They contradict themselves a lot.

The thing is, they only have to pick songs that were OF a certain genre, like CW. They don't have to PERFORM them in CW-style, they can DO the song screaming-rocker style if they want to. If it goes well, they are lauded for "making the song their own". If not, then they should have chosen a different song, or they need to figure out "who they are".

Last week, Jena Irene, who is 17, did "Can't Help Falling In Love" that was made famous by Elvis. She turned that song into something a-MAZE-ing. It's worth the trip to YouTube.

Why is taht? Because Rockers first really cant sing, but rather thinking screaching for the high notes is appealing to the ear. Give me a break.

What??? You got to be kidding me! Rockers are some of the best singers! Screeching? They don't screech! They got range! Country singers are questionable because they always like to do the nasally vocal style of singing which is like a donkey neighing!

But I am not a fan of Keith Urban as well, so...., I don't care if he ruins country music. I'm surprise an Australian is even into Country.

LOL, I'm surprise you are picking on Keith Urban and not Taylor Swift. Isn't she making country Pop?

BadCopNoDonut -> RE: Is Country Music Dead, Is Keith Urban help to kill it? (5/13/2014 12:47:00 PM)

I love all music, each genre has it's own place. My personal collection would scare most anyone. There are many, singers in both genres of Country Music & Rock, that honestly can't sing. However, there are just as many who can. Remember Elvis (not Costello), he combined both styles in his music. Death to country Music, started with Billy Ray Cyrus, personally. His daughter, Miley has far for singig ability tha her father ever could have dreamed of having.

Sure the Randy Travis, & George Jones singing styles are less seen today. If you want to be mad or upset with anyone, it should be the Music Executives, & notthe artists theselves, those are who, shoud be blamed for the death of any music genre.
