Maybe because it's wise for government to keep others safe and in check so those without wisdom don't fuck things up for everyone else. That's not to say that government is wise, it's completely open to corruption, an example being American politicians. But that doesn't mean changes to government can't be made in a wise manner so as to make things more accurate with government's true roles, such as removing the ability for politicians to be bought out by the rich and prompting said politicians to be more considerate towards the needs of the people.

You're not responding to the proposition...

total wisdom would lead a people to a perfect government.

And you've also neglected to address the problem of who gets to decide what is "wise".

That doesn't happen...

    quote:

Superbugs resistant to drugs pose a serious worldwide threat and demand a response on the same scale as efforts to combat climate change, infectious disease specialists said on Thursday.

Warning that a world without effective antibiotics would be "deadly", with routine surgery, treatments for cancer and diabetes and organ transplants becoming impossible, the experts said the international response had been far too weak.

"We have needed to take action against the development of antimicrobial resistance for more than 20 years. Despite repeated warnings, the international response has been feeble," said Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust medical charity.

Thank God no one uses scare tactics...

You really live in a very sad existence to arrive at this notion....

Who decides? The ones whom are wise and do their utmost to free themselves of negative bias. The ones that wish to have good freedoms all the while explaining why the bad freedoms lead towards destructive moments. No one is picked to be a wise person; but that wise people tend to be respected not for having vast fortunes, popularity, or influence. They could be very intelligent, well studied individuals that really wish to have good things happen to their fellow Americans.

A perfect government, is a hard thing to obtain. Its even harder to maintain it.

There is no such thing as a perfect government.

Existentially speaking,

quote:

Why would a people possessed of total wisdom require government?

Without freedom of choice, wisdom cannot be attained.
Government curtails the exercise of personal freedoms.
It's a circular argument.

Wisdom and Freedom... apples and oranges.
I just can't see a relationship that could give an either or choice on that.
Wisdom vs Education, yeah.
Freedom vs Safety, yeah

Freedom vs Wisdom.... does not compute

A wise slave is not a slave for long. A stupid free man is not long for the world. That's why wise slaves obtain freedom, while stupid free men win Darwin Awards!

Its deceptive, isn't it? Your first reaction is that its a simple question. But after giving it some actual real thought, the true depth starts to loom into mind.

Interesting question to ponder. I suppose at one time, when humans existed in a state of nature, we were living in total freedom, but ostensibly had to develop the wisdom to build a civilization at some point. I think that we're wise enough to know that total freedom is not an option. Perhaps true wisdom comes from knowing where the proper balance should be in a given society, as to how much freedom is "too much" or "not enough" or "just right."

Total freedom is anarchy, right? Where as total wisdom would lead a people to a perfect government. If a good people were to form a good society/government to say, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, good wisdom would be a requirement. The reason tyrannical governments never work well, is the absence of good, healthy freedoms. But to have those good, healthy freedoms, takes wisdom. But in order to obtain that wisdom, one must have freedom to experiment on productive and destructive moments. It may sound like I'm arguing both sides here, but I would favor wisdom over freedom. Since wisdom gives good freedoms, while acknowledging what destructive freedoms can do.

I can see how a case can be made for both sides, although suffice it to say, I'm glad that we don't actually have to choose between freedom or wisdom, since we need them both.

That is interesting. Now I know from history classes that we had slaves here for a long time, so are you saying that they were all really stupid and that's why they didn't obtain freedom?
