I NEVER watch the local news. I really haven't watched it on a regular basis since the mid 80s.....until now. I've been caring for my ailing mother for the last 2 months, and staying at her place. Well....she likes to watch the local news, and I now remember why I stopped watching it.

I realize that today (Memorial Day) is probably a "slow" news day, but honestly....I'm sitting here watching the "local" (which in my case means out of Philadelphia) news and they literally just spend the first 20 minutes of the program talking about what the local citizens are doing to celebrate the holiday. Which would be ok....except that they could play the exact same story every year for 20 years and it wouldn't change. In the case of the local Philadelphia viewing region.....the go to the "Jersey Shore". So they tape image of people lying on the beach and then give a few people their 60 seconds of fame by asking them if they are enjoying themselves and commenting on the weather. Then they take a few shots of other locals in parades in different areas. Then to top it off they take pics of people in the local parks having barbeques. Even on days that aren't holidays, they talk about fender bender accidents and celebrity gossip (most recently Kim Kardashian's wedding)

Seriously.....is this really considered "news" that we all need to know about ? Am I the only one who really doesn't think it is?

No, you're not.

(I used to live in Malvern and Center City. I miss cheesesteaks. SERIOUSLY miss them).

It's even worse, when you're out of Philthadelphia and P'town; out here in Pennsyltucky.

every time you write "pennsyltucky", DS, I see that chick from "Orange is the New Black" in my mind... LOL

Shininglight23 -> RE: Local News (5/26/2014 3:31:20 PM)

I haven't watched the news much since my move to the West Coast. However, when I was living in Pennsyltucky (as DS unfortunately likes to call it) I watched quite a bit. Personally, I would rather watch the news from back there...the slow side.. vs. what I would get now... gang shootings, police shootings, stabbings, etc. I'd take a segment on 80 year old veterans any day...

My sister has lived in Florida for about 25 years. Anytime she comes up here she goes to a local steak shop and gets herself at least one cheesesteak and then for the trip home she gets all the fixings for a few genuine Italian subs to make for her friends down there.

Oh how I miss eating an Italian Ice while spending a hot summers night on South Street!

I guess you have to go for the Reading and Lancaster stations? I'm trying to remember if Reading even has any local stations. But I used to live in DuBois and the "local" stations they got out there all came out of Pittsburgh.....about 100 miles away. (local????)

I once heard PA described as "Philadelphia at one end and Pittsburgh at the other, with Alabama in between."

twoholewonder -> RE: Local News (5/26/2014 4:41:43 PM)

My trips home to PA always include a trip to a place in Bath called the Kiffle Kitchen, because no one down in Virginia even knows what a kiffle is, let alone how to make one.

DominantWoman65 -> RE: Local News (5/26/2014 4:43:25 PM)

I don't remember Reading having a station but Allentown, Harrisburg and Wilkes Barre does.

DesFIP -> RE: Local News (5/26/2014 6:24:22 PM)

Local news here is a hundred miles each direction, NYC, Hartford, and Albany. If we had a local station, maybe they would be able to tell me tomorrow's weather with some degree of accuracy.

The Man's from Darby. He often bewails the lack of a decent pizza steak. But you can't get the bread here. And that's essential.

DominantWoman65 -> RE: Local News (5/26/2014 6:44:33 PM)

I raised my children in Schuylkill County, we never had accurate weather from the local stations but we sure make a good beer (Yuengling)!
I'm visiting in June and can't wait to get my hands on a good slice and a fat cheese steak.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Local News (5/27/2014 11:16:25 AM)

I have found that weather in any valley (I've lived in four) is always facocta.

My TV comes out of Wilkes Barre but it does my head in that the ABC and NBC affiliates share a news show (Eyewitness news).

Originally being from Brooklyn, you're all crazy when you mention "good pizza" and "Pennsyltucky" in the same sentence.

If you're going to be in the Luzerne County area, give a holler!

Channel 16!
There is a little place in Pottsville that makes an unbelievable pie, the good and greasy kind!
Thanks, if I find myself in your area I will surely give you a shout.
