Any suggestions for a good beach book or summer read? I'm looking for ideas of things to load on to my kindle for laying out and enjoying the good weather that is (supposedly) finally here..

What genre? I prefer the classics myself, along with paranormal, romance, mystery, sci-fi and thrillers. I have a Kindle keyboard and 5 bookshelves loaded with books and we are constantly raiding garage sales or going to the library.

The Outlander series. author Diana Gabaldon. The newest one comes out 6/9. Start from the beginning though. Each book stands alone, but reading them in sequence makes more sense.

Anything good.. From classics to romance to philosophy to thrillers. Last year I downloaded a bunch of classics to read/reread that are free as they are public domain!

I love those too!

If your kindle has a web browser, go to freekindlebooks.org. Out of copyright books are posted free for the taking. Lots of good stuff there.

FR

If you'll be at the beach, Anne Morrow Lindbergh's Gift From the Sea might make a nice companion.

Do you use Amazon at all? Between my purchases and my wish list, it's given me some cool reading recommendations.

Reading choice is such a personal thing but, for my money, one can't go wrong with Agatha Christie (I prefer the Hercule Poirot stories but all are good).

I also like the old Perry Mason Mysteries by Erle Stanley Gardner.

Also, while I absolutely detest the two movies I've seen, I enjoy reading the James Bond novels by Ian Fleming.

I know that after I read my personal favorite, I will be starting in on the latter.

Screen captures still RULE! Ya feel me?

I really like this as an audiobook: 2030 by Albert Brooks (yes, the actor who happens to be a pretty crackin' writer as well.)

http://www.amazon.com/2030-Real-Story-Happens-America/dp/B00A1A13RI

My county library had it in their digital download site.

I am pretty big on murder mysteries and thrillers/horror etc. I'll give you a short list of some of my favorites.

The Nero Wolfe series- by Rex Stout - Wolfe is one of the most endearing characters along with his personal secretary Archie Goodwin who tells the stories. They are a fun romp because in Wolfe's home there is a routine, and he hates when his routine is broken. Of course, things interfere with that and he throws fits. I suggest a small collection for starters, like Three for the Chair, or And Four To Go.

Perry Mason - Erle Stanley Gardner - Any Perry Mason book is a lot of fun to read. Mason gets himself into some of the most difficult situations as an attorney for his clients who are ultimately tried for murder. His simple logic is unsurpassed.

John Dickson Carr (author) - Carr is a master of the locked room mystery. He was an expert on the occult too, and weaves that into his books sometimes. For suggested reading by him, two of my favorites are The Three Coffins and The Burning Court... which was one of the scariest things I have read... but damn good.

If you like Horror, I would point you to Clive Barker's Books Of Blood, you can find them in a collection of volumes, and they are short stories. Those of you that think that Steven King is the master of horror will be surprised to know that Barker makes King look like a Sunday School teacher.

Dean Koontz - For a bit of a change in horror Koontz is fun. His series Odd Thomas is very good. Start with the first book in that series.

Just a few off the top of my head for you.

Just for fun and relaxation I recommend two that were just released.

The Kraken Project by Douglas Preston… This is about an artificial intelligence, Dorothy of course, developed for a one way ride to Titan that becomes aware and escapes to the internet. The FBI, NASA, and Wall Street are after her when she finds a 14 year old crippled boy along with her programmer and a presidential special investigator to help her escape.. I loved it.

The other I have not read but I do love the Dresden Files series… Skin Game by Jin Butcher... Next on my reading list.

Butch

I second that. When read (not listened to as an audiobook), I like the super-short chapters. Works well with my ADD! [8D]

I like mysteries most....just like others have mentioned....Erle Stanley Gardner, and Agatha Christie are a must. My guilty pleasure lately has been James Patterson "Women's Murder Club" series....good for lazy days on the beach. I also like Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch novels.

It's so funny to me....as much as I have always enjoyed reading, I never read very much because whenever I would read I would just doze off after 2 pages. Then I would spend time re-reading what I read the night before until I finally found the part I left off. Then I would read 2 pages and fall asleep again. What's funny now is that ever since I bought a Kindle I've read probably 18-20 books in the last 8 months. I used to read *maybe* 2 books a year.

Silverlock by John Myers Myers.

For first class murder mysteries, P.D. James.
