Saw this on Facebook, and it seemed apt for the thread.

I'm hoping that's addressed on next Sunday's sign.

To be fair trying to wreck this thread is the most intelligent thing I've seen her do, considering that she is the poster child for how to make America a third world country and all.

It will take me a bit of time to go through this thread, but I am already seeing a few things I am not happy with. This is the feisty dungeon, but we still have rules. Some of you might consider reading the section guidelines. Until I can get through this after my long absence due to computer issues, I would recommend making sure your post is within the few moderation guidelines we have here.

Thank you

Those church signs were kind of uplifting, K. Ta. We tend to hear only about the looney and nasty religious stuff in the US this side of the pond.

It's a shame that that's so often the case. As I said, I'm not religious, but I have nothing but good things to say about the church my wife attended. When she was sick, and especially when she was dying, they couldn't do enough for us or her. She had people sitting with her for hours a day, sometimes a pastor, sometimes just another parishioner. They were always dropping off food. They even performed the funeral service and refused to take a penny for it. So yeah, there are a lot of religious nuts out there, but there are a lot more good people too.

Oh come on now, should we practice tolerance to stupidity?

Don't we tolerate yours?

Back in the day they just burned the fucking heretics at the stake. Christian tolerance.

Church organization burned heretics at the stake. Don't confuse Church organization with religion just as we don't confuse forum with lifestyle.

The confusion lies in your reading of history. Christian laity participated in countless pogroms against Jews throughout the centuries. Tis the exclusivity and violence of Christianity that has been an ugly sore in Western history. Just as bad as its fellow Abrahamic religion, Islam. It is the religion that teaches hate to those who hold 'heretical' views.

Oh I don't know. If I had a professor come in and start preaching atheism to my class I would probably have thought he pretty much got what he deserved.

I just wanted you to take a couple of steps in the other sides shoes, you know the golden rule and all that. To think how you'd feel about the statement: Oh I don't know. If I had a professor come in and start preaching christianity a̶t̶h̶e̶i̶s̶m̶ to my class I would probably have thought he pretty much got what he deserved.

That's because the looeney and nasty shit sells papers. No one wants to read about the church down the road that hands out food to the needy and helps the community. Where's the drama in that?

Christians are following Christ and Christ did not persecute but was instead persecuted. You point to persons who were not Christians who were and are led by human controlled Church organizations rather than the Word of God. The Word is clear on the subject and does not include what you describe. If you do not follow the Word then you are not a Christian in action and therefore thought.

You had previously pointed out "And yes I would be just as annoyed if he suddenly started preaching the gospel." So I'm wondering (as I mentioned earlier) does your statement work the other way around? If tomorrow atheists were to strap on their colanders and beat the consciousness out of all those inappropriately shoving the gospel in our faces would the Christians have "deserved" the acts of terrorism committed against them?

So yeah, there are a lot of religious nuts out there, but there are a lot more good people too.

The same with my elderly mom's church I used to take her to. While recuperating from two emergency heart surgeries, she had problems swallowing food and all the church ladies took turns bringing her homemade soups every day. They laid hands on her in prayer, which has a medically recognized beneficial effect called "therapeutic touch" which many nurses and other health care providers practice on patients, and this was a great comfort to her. Her pastor visited her daily, so along with my presence, she was not left there by herself alone for one single day. The whole church turned out to pay their respects to her at her viewings and funeral in the middle of winter. I took them all out to a lunch buffet to show my gratitude and donated to their women's missionary fund.

Religion, in addition to individual spirituality, is best practiced as kindness to others in action, thought, and in deed.

Yes I did, I asked "And where did I ever suggest lawsuits should just be replaced with harming people?" and that didn't answer it. so again, what's your point?

That was already answered in this post...

And yes I would be just as annoyed if he suddenly started preaching the gospel. But I have a feeling the reactions from some would be vastly different if it had be presented that way.

The way I'm reading this is that you're saying there are people who deserve to be harmed for their speech and I don't see a reading that avoids that, so I'm asking for clarification. Do god-botherers deserve beatings?
