Of course, the other side of this is the Taliban prisoners who were released in exchange for Bergdahl. The implication here is that the US might have gotten the raw end of the deal, ostensibly trading high-ranking enemy officials for Bergdahl.

Which of the people in custody at gitmo would you not let go to get your kid back,your wife,you mom. Remember,if you will,this is the man who is out in front of u.s. foriegn policy with a rifle in his hand and a ticket for the body bag lotto. You are saying the man you are asking to take a bullet for you may not be worth some fuckwad you have no clue about.
Imagine you are a recruiter talking to me and telling me that if I get captured you are going to try to find some three leged dog with herpes to trade for me instead of something my captors might actually want. You want me to sign where???[8|]

Well, it's unlikely that I ever would have become a recruiter. I was turned down for military service when I tried to join, but I don't recall that the recruiter mentioned anything about what would happen if I got captured.

I get your general point that we don't want to leave anyone behind. But some here seem to be saying that we gave away too much. It's not really up to me to make that decision, but this is where the crux of this disagreement seems to stem from.

The possibility of capture is something recruiters don't talk about.

Politesub53 -> RE: Bergdahl (6/8/2014 4:00:26 PM)

I am thinking there is more to this "swap" the exchange for Bergdahl could well be part of a bigger plan to kickstart peace talks. A show of intent possibly.

Ken, I'm sorry, but you're wrong. While you may not have heard about it, there is no legal requirement for someone to be absent for 30 days before being charged with desertion. http://usmilitary.about.com/od/punitivearticles/a/mcm85.htm

This link is regarding what is known as the 30 day rule. http://usmilitary.about.com/od/justicelawlegislation/a/awol2.htm

Missing movement isn't just a navy offense, it's Article 87 of the UCMJ Missing Movement, and applies to all service members.

And by the way, I did serve in the Army.

Read your own link
quote:

The primary difference between the two offenses is "intent to remain away permanently." If one intends to return to "military control," one is guilty of "AWOL," under Article 86, not Desertion, under Article 85, even if they were away for ten years.

Assuming the Rolling Stone article is correct then he intended to come back and therefore he is not a deserter.

How totally random

What a complete and total surprise

Rolling Stone leaping forward in knee-jerk fashion to defend an America-hating traitor

Who could ever have foreseen that happening

On another note, some experts are calling Barack Obama insane in light of some of the recent spectacles he has made of himself, including this swapping of a traitor for five Taliban commanders while we are still fighting in Afghanistan

Article is from 3 years ago.

I'm sorry, but just a page or two back you were using that same Rolling Stone article to make your point, yet suddenly it's old and invalid?

DomKen: "Assuming the Rolling Stone article is correct then he intended to come back and therefore he is not a deserter."

What's the matter, are articles only old and outdated when they're not backing up your opinion?

Per the NY Times, he left a note saying that he was starting a new life and shipped his personal belongings home. Per Rolling Stone, he sent his parents an e-mail before he left saying how evil the US was, and how sorry he is for serving in the Army. That right there is intent and changes his status from AWOL to Deserter the minute his foot crossed the perimeter.

QFT.
Plain. Pure. Simple. Truth.

There was no note by all accounts and the email was about an MRAP running over a kid.

Here's a bit of the email I was able to find.

"The future is too good to waste on lies. And life is way too short to care for the damnation of others, as well as to spend it helping fools with their ideas that are wrong. I have seen their ideas and I am ashamed to even be american. The horror of the self-righteous arrogance that they thrive in. It is all revolting. In the US army you are cut down for being honest [...] but if you are a conceited brown nosing shit bag you will be allowed to do what ever you want, and you will be handed your higher rank... The system is wrong. I am ashamed to be an american. And the title of US soldier is just the lie of fools [...]The US army is the biggest joke the world has to laugh at. It is the army of liars, backstabbers, fools, and bullies. [...] The few good SGTs are getting out as soon as they can, and they are telling us privates to do the same. [...] I am sorry for everything here. These people need help, yet what they get is the most conceited country in the world telling them that they are nothing and that they are stupid, that they have nfo idea how to live. We don't even care when we hear each other talk about running their children down in the dirt streets with our armored trucks [...] We make fun of them in front of their faces, and laugh at them for not understanding we are insulting them...I am sorry for everything. The horror that is america is disgusting [...] There are a few more boxes coming to you guys. Feel free to open them, and use them."

One line about a child being hit by a truck, the rest is a rant about how evil the US and it's military are.

TheHeretic -> RE: Bergdahl (6/8/2014 7:28:39 PM)

The Rolling Stone article significantly predates the current controversy, and it was good journalism (the author was a better writer than driver, as things turned out in the end).

cloudboy -> RE: Bergdahl (6/8/2014 7:40:14 PM)

The MOB judgments of the right wingers on this thread are ugly and ignorant. Of course the OP is off his rocker in a rush to judgment.

The right wing reaction to the Bergdahi case mirrors the same kind of reaction to the IRS and Benghazi "scandals." The FOX noise machine ramps up: banging drums, sounding alarm bells, spinning up non existent facts, and while over- simplifying complicated decisions in an effort to have a Gotchya moment v. the Obama Presidency.

The most distasteful element here is the vicious maligning of a POW to justify the pound of flesh you want to extort.

TheHeretic -> RE: Bergdahl (6/8/2014 7:47:33 PM)

Take your shit and get off the thread, Cloudboy. This isn't a partisan thing.

Musicmystery -> RE: Bergdahl (6/8/2014 7:49:37 PM)

It isn't? Because it certainly quacks like one.

Did he or did he not of his own volition leave his post in a combat zone?
Who disputes this fact?
When he left his post and went go over to the enemy the fact that they didn't welcome him with open arms does not make him a POW, he still deserted, it just didn't work out like he thought it would.
That is not demanding a pound of flesh, that's facts.
As for Obama, did he or did he not violate a law he signed in regards to notifying Congress of Gitmo releases?
That's not gotcha that's facts.

Really? Because I'd swear I'm in here defending the need to bring our soldier home, get him healed, and then figure out the circumstances of his capture, and we have representation from the left saying it's their last straw with Obama.

Making it partisan makes it easy to dismiss, so if you want the cowards way out of the scandal (and to play proxie for a vile piece of shit I only see on the scroll), stay your course.

Musicmystery -> RE: Bergdahl (6/8/2014 8:15:58 PM)

Fair enough, indeed you are.

I don't think that position speaks for the thread, however.

And I have been dismissing things like his alleged conversion.
I believe that what he did constitutes desertion, and I am inclined to give service members the benefit of the doubt.

kdsub -> RE: Bergdahl (6/8/2014 8:18:26 PM)

I do believe this goes beyond partisan politics Muse...Sure the Republicans are making political hay nothing new there...But many Americans of all political or non-political views are critical of Obama's actions in this boondoggle.

Forget all the crap about whether this soldier is a deserter or not many Americans would still be upset with this deal even if this were a hero. This goes against what Americans feel is the right thing to do... It makes no difference that we have done this very type of thing in the past to many of us this was at best a poor decision.

Butch

Never said it's old or invalid. Just making the point that Rolling Stone isn't leaping forward to do anything. The article in question was published 3 years ago.
