tweakabelle -> More Catholic Church institutional child abuse .... (6/2/2014 5:55:54 AM)

Just when we thought that we had heard the worst of the stories about institutional child abuse by Catholic Church and its agencies, a new horror surfaces:
"In the past week, a horror story has unfolded. Eight hundred children are buried in an unmarked mass grave in Tuam, Co Galway, in a disused septic tank on the former grounds of an institution known locally as “The Home”. The Bon Secours nuns operated “The Home” between 1926 and 1961 and over the years housed thousands of unmarried mothers and their “illegitimate” children.
The tireless work of historian Catherine Corless has revealed that 796 children, the oldest nine years, the youngest two days old, are in that tank. Causes of death include “malnutrition, measles, convulsions, tuberculosis, gastroenteritis and pneumonia”. The tank is described as “filled to the brim with tiny bones and skulls”.
On Liveline during the week, a clear picture emerged. Unmarried mothers incarcerated until they signed over their babies, healthy children sold to be adopted by wealthy Americans and disabled infants, who had no sale value, abandoned in “Dying Rooms”, and their bodies dumped by the brides of Christ in a septic tank

This horror has left me speechless. The levels of moral depravity and hypocrisy are so wretched they seem beyond words. What are your thoughts?

This story is all over the net but isn't headline news here in the UK, so far as I've seen today. That's kind of disturbing in itself.

It hasn't made the mainstream media here either. A little surprising really, you would have thought it has all the elements needed for a good journalistic story.

Mind you, we have the ongoing Jimmy Savile saga still headlining here. This now happily deceased DJ abused over 500 children in his lifetime, so it's reckoned, without any of our majestic police, legal institutions or social services ever finding out, or doing anything, about it. A cynic might say that no one really gives a toss about children, basically. Either that, or they'll forget about children if concern for them gets in the way of their enthusiastic arselicking of the "great and the good".

Sickening and heart-rending.

WTF!

Run a big orphanage for enough years and kids are going to die but none should die of malnutrition and none should be interred in a septic tank. What kind of monsters were these nuns?

There was a program about it some months ago on British TV.
It wasn't only this one place either.
Apparently, there were quite a number of wash-houses dotted around Ireland that were run by the church and just as bad.

I saw a documentary a while back about these houses for single mothers but nothing was said about a kid dying every couple of weeks for 35 years. That level of neglect is just outrageous.

Sounds vaguely familiar actually.. heard the same sorta story before, just a different place but similar abuses & greed.. that happened in Nova Scotia too at a "home" (which was closed in 1945).... the babies sold to wealthy Americans.. but it was made public long ago, book written and movie.. the Butterbox Babies.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterbox_Babies I expect there are other similar "homes" from that era that have managed to escape publicity..

If it is true, it sounds a lot like a modern American abortion clinic, save for the babies adopted out.
Not many babies survive an American abortionist.

Except for the fact that abortionists do something immoral, hence the terrible and ungodly result for the lives concerned, whereas in this case, it was all done by pious devotees of the Catholic Church who were doubtless utterly opposed to the evil of abortion, hence the entirely beneficial result for the children concerned of, er, er ....

No, I give up. There isn't enough iron in the world for the irony of this post.

You're overlooking a key factor, Peon: "Pro-life" ends at birth. Once mama's pushed the baby out, preferably against her will, no one gives a fuck about it.

Marge Pierce expressed this vividly in her poem Right to Life:

You value children so dearly
that none ever go hungry, none weep
with no one to tend them when mothers
work, none lack fresh fruit,
none chew lead or cough to death and your
orphanages are empty. Every noon the best
restaurants serve poor children steaks.
