News flash - Baracks no-borders policy is unpopular

[/sarcasm]

quote:

(Reuters) - As President Barack Obama considers sidestepping Congress to loosen U.S. immigration policy, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Americans are deeply worried that illegal immigration is threatening the nation's culture and economy.

Seventy percent of Americans - including 86 percent of Republicans - believe undocumented immigrants threaten traditional U.S. beliefs and customs, according to the poll....

With Congress failing to agree on broad immigration reforms, Obama could act alone in the next few weeks to give work permits to up to 5 million undocumented immigrants and delay some deportations, according to media reports.

Hispanic and liberal voters would welcome that, but the online survey suggests much of the rest of the nation may not.

However this may affect the mid-term elections remains to be seen, although strictly speaking, the problem with undocumented immigrants started long before Obama came to office. Neither party has much room in blaming the other, since neither party has really come up with any real solution. Even if they could agree on a solution (which they can't), neither party really seems to know what to do anyway. In the meantime, there's millions of undocumented immigrants already here within our borders. What do we do?

Put simply, we have two choices: Let them stay or send them back. If we send them back, then they'll just come back however they can. We can try to secure the border, hire more Border Patrol, build better fences, more drones and sensors along the border, which is being done already - yet they still manage to get across. Then there are those who have a large financial stake in maintaining illegal access across the border. At the same time, we're actively encouraging legal access and trade with the same country from which we're trying to keep all these people out. It's rather paradoxical, when you really think about it.

The other dimension of this issue which often goes unnoticed by both major parties involves our problematic history with Mexico and other nations of Latin America. So, this issue could also have diplomatic and international repercussions. From a practical geopolitical standpoint, we need to handle this carefully.

Oh, there is also a large internal component to this, of our own origin. A considerable number of Mexicans were made American citizens when we seized Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California (Puerto Rico), (we damn near had Cuba, we sure let many in)....remember, we wanted this Estados Unidos.

You're fuckin with a lotta real 'Merikans here.

You're on the wrong side of history, PERIOD. In 25 years all the people you want forcibly deported out of the USA will be here, mostly likely with legal status. Additionally the immigration laws will have been changed. Also the force and power of conservative, white guys like you will be further diminished by the USA's changing demographics.

Hopefully in 25 years, too, people will be better informed about the nation's challenges instead of reducing them to raw, petty, unhelpful, partisan emotions.

So we should surrender and learn Spanish?
Maybe we should apply for admission into Mexico.
