The tea party isn't radical, it is just plain stupid. The idea that we need to live within our means and balance the budget is a good one, the problem is that the tea party and its candidates are a bunch of morons whose own claims contradict one another. They want to slash welfare spending (claiming that if we just got rid of welfare, we could balance the budget, which is complete bullshit) yet want to increase defense spending (in large part because tea party members live in areas that get a lot of money from defense spending); they want to slash taxes on the rich and corporations, at a time when massive budget deficits were caused by those cuts (not to mention that the well off have gone off on a run of amassing wealth and income percentage at a rate not seen since the 19th century). They bitch and moan about how no one listens to 'real americans', and then cheer decisions like citizens united that allow the rich and corporations to buy elections. They claims to be grassroots, yet are owned by mega rich like the Koch Brothers. At a time when the US is in a struggle against rising countries like China, where education is the key to economic success, they are parading around with the cult of ignorance, how 'real americans' ie uneducated hicks and rubes, are superior and people with educations are 'elitist' and 'not real americans'. If science is presenting them with facts, they want to ban science (I find it fucking frightening that the house committee on science is chaired by some congressmen from Texas; that is like Homer Simpson running a nuclear power plant). They stand for nothing, their economics are crackpot delusions, and they can't seem to understand that they rely on the federal government as much or more than many people on welfare do.
