Your OP was about something called "Veil" that you apply to your vehical is absorb the laser from a speed detecting gun, not about a laser detector. If you really want to test this out, you'd drive 15 to 20mph over the limit, not 5mph over. Of course the cops won't pull you over for going 5mph over the speed limit and the slowing down. Thats just a waste of time.

Sorry...I should have added this explanation.  When the officer uses the laser gun, the laser detector alarm goes off.  As soon as he releases the trigger, the alarm stops.  If you get hit multiple times, the alarm will go on and off; this is an indication the officer did not get a reading and tried again.  Several users have reported multiple hits as they approach a trap while a few have actually seen the officer lower the gun and look at it as if he was checking if something was wrong.

Independent testers do something different.  They set up a trap on a road where they can carefully measure the distance they can track the car as it approaches.  The laser gun will indicate the distance and speed when it gets a reading.  They do this several times with a car that's unprotected, then apply the coating and repeat the same set of tests.  What they've found is the coating cuts the effective range of the laser gun in half, sometimes much more.  They performed this test on all laser guns used in the United States.

So with everything in place, the strategy is to slow down as soon as your alarm goes off, with the coating giving you enough time to be within the speed limit by the time the laser gets a reading.  There are other countermeasures available as well, including a device that sends back it's own laser light to confuse the gun completely.  I've seen real life videos of a guy who drove right through several laser traps with the officer shooting the gun over and over right up until he passes by.

You're right...my experience so far has been limited but so far it's within the bounds of what I learned to expect.  Obviously I'm not going to go flying through a trap at a speed that's high enough to detect with the naked eye.  I'm also not looking to drive at excessive speed but rather just push the envelope on long trips to make good time and have some peace of mind.  This is the product's intended use.

Yes, the coating is meant to cut the effective range of the gun.  But you still need a laser detector to be alerted to slow down.  The coating is meant to buy you some time.

I'm sorry, but you are full of it. My father was a cop for years, and the little laser guns and dectors can get you at almosta  mile away.  The colour of your car does not affect it, nor does a little bit of plastic deflect the beam. If you blow by a cop at obviously high speeds he can still come after you and tail you.  Gives him plenty of time for another reading.

Thanks for your kind words.  For the record, I'm not trying to pull anything funny here.  I found something that has been documented both by real life users video taping themselves driving through live speed traps and by volunteer testers setting up a controlled environment to demonstrate how the product works.

I might add here that active duty police officers participated in the testing to insure the laser guns were being used just as they would in the field.

If anyone wants the websites that demonstrate this stuff, just say the word.  Or just Google "radar detectors", "laser detectors", "veil", "laserveil", or go to any of the forums that discuss this cat and mouse game.
