Hello A/all, The problem I have with the "You dont have the right to health care" is that that ideal conflicts with the NIMBY (Not In My BackYard) ideals which America stands for. Deny whoever you want health care, but open your homes and driveways and sidewalks for the poor and destitute (illegal or not) who decide to die of syphilus and typhoid and tuberculosis and HIV because we have ordered doctors (who take an oath to aid the afflicted) to not provide medical treatment to these people. It is like anti-abortion types. When they start adopting children born to drug addicted mothers, poor mothers, etc., in record numbers, I wont think they are a bunch of whining NIMBY nitwits. I prefer to live in a country where "compassion," as in the phrase "compassionate conservative," means more than gutting social programs, executing as many people as you can, throwing as many hard working citizens in prison for non-violent offenses as you can, and invading foreign countries to affirm our right to drive Hummers. Just me, could be wrong, etc. Sinergy

But it's a long hard road for both sides. And there are those on both sides that are very happy with the status quo. Technology and trends fly through society at breakneck speed. But society overall crawls forward at a snails pace. Frustration.

Germans being the largest group at 15%, followed by Irish at 11%, English 9%, Italians 5.5%, Scandinavian 4%, plus of course all the other nationalities that don't have large percentages. 13% African, 13% Hispanic, 1.5% Native American. I don't know how these figures are arrived at since mixing the gene pool will blur the overall picture. I once read in an article that the number of Americans that claim Irish descent is impossible and only could be true if people with one Irish grandparent claimed Irish descent and forgot about the other three grandparents. I guess this can be spread throughout the ethnic groups and so a proper picture can't really be drawn. However, the mix is such that one can't claim their specific ancestry and cultural values to be truely American. Spanish is the fastest growing language and is the first language of approx. 19% of the population. There have been forcasts that the US will be bi-lingual by 2050. English having been the first language of approx. 98% of US citizens in 1960. How accurate this information is I don't know but it is fascinating and shows what everyone knows, that the US is a mix of people and cultures and that power between groups changes and is in a constant state of flux so some people who hold onto their original culture too strongly might well feel threatened as power shifts. EDITED> Just wondering, as the power changes from white European to Hispanic whether an English inherited democratic culture will change to a more Latin American macho culture.

I love getting copies of this particular piece about once every 5 or 6 months from aquaintances. It's been passed around via email for several years now - but it still gives me a good chuckle every time I see it. Sinergy, I want a copy of that tshirt you mentioned. I'm of mixed decent - with Cherokee, Kiowa, and Apache all being large parts of the mix. (Hey, I've always admitted that I'm not a natural blond, so don't judge by the profile pics LOL) So - all yall primarily european types - GO HOME or start paying better rent on our property. As far as the rest of the "immigrant" debate that's gone on in this thread, I'd like to point something out. The gripe, per se, has not been with LEGAL immigrants. By definition, an Illegal Immigrant IS a Criminal - if they weren't, they would be Legal immigrants. See the difference there? There are many of us out here, in my opinion, who have no issue with those who actually come here Legally - provided of course that they continue to do things Legally. I have just as much issue with ANYONE who crosses the borders in defiance of all immigration laws, regardless of their country of origin, as I do with the various central and south american illegals. Hell, I would have a problem with Martians who landed and then refused to go home after their "vacation" on sunny terran soil. Oh - and Article II - you do not have the right to never be offended - is something that I would personally love to thrash into all those politically correct "oh you can't say That" types.

There are rights & then there are responsibilities. In some places they meet each other, in others they don't. Individuals have rights & responsibilities [legally], Corporations have rights & no responsibilities. [legally]. Until that is fixed [& don't expect politicos to do it], we'll always have an imbalance of power in this country.

Oh, that's rich. I can't even take that sort of criticism of the left seriously, as I was using that same argument against so-called conservatives who were all behind the flag-burning amendment. There are people on both sides of the right/left wing divide who are pro-censorship, unfortunately.
