Craigslist has numerous ads for free leather couches, sofas, etc. Has anyone ever gotten one of those and used a shop knife to cut leather strips out of it, and made a flogger from the strips?

Oh my DarkSteven! Are you saying you have? And I thought I was resourceful. Never considered it before but now I am. How would you grade the floggers? Could imagine I would have to buy leather cleaner to wipe it down thoroughly first.

Most furniture leather isn't the right grade for what you're looking for. I tried making a flogger out of what I thought was a great piece of leather from an old chair, only to find it had been very thin leather applique glued to a canvas backing for rigidity. A better source would be the incredible worn out leather boots that end up on the racks at the thrift stores, old belts (nice and smooth from years of stress and friction), and those funky 70's driving coats, as long as they're too far gone to be valuable as is. Lots of neatsfoot oil will be required in any event, and follow up with mink oil. X-Acto knives and pins so you can cut them straight are advisable, and have band-aids and disinfectant handy. You will give blood doing this.

@MasterCaneman, thanks! I figured there was SOME reason why people weren't doing this.

Could it still work if you're not going for something especially sadistic? Or is it a question of durability?

Furniture, no, but I used to recycle old belts and leather pocket books into kink products. (My theory was, if it moved far enough back into the attic that no one remembered it, it was fair game) I mostly did bondage gear, but I think I made one flogger that lasted me till I could afford better.

My first leather impact tool was a strap purchased from a tack shop. It was about the length of a belt and two inches wide. It was cheap and had more thud than sting but made a noise that would wake the dead. This was my "pre-flogger" tool. It worked well.

When we ran the dungeon company we supplied furniture on a hire basis. To cut down on costs a promoter of a small club asked if we could just bring along two items, he would supply the rest. On arriving with the cage and St Andrews, he proudly took us over to show us something he had made. Pointing towards something that very vaguely resembled a spanking bench, he proudly said, "I made that out of an old leather jacket". We know, we said, you left the sleeves on it. [:D]

Interesting ideas here.

I have an object that I fashioned by weaving paracord around a foot long steel bolt, with about 16 inches trailing off, with the ends knotted. It's not quite a flogger, more of a light whip. Much more stingy than thuddy. But it leaves pretty red stripes if you use it properly. All home depot, cost me about $8

Why not use the old school satchels that are made from thick leather and the belts on it can make cool mouth gag as well.
The sort i used were the ones kids would carry on there back with just a few books in it for first and second class beginners.

Use a bradawl to punch holes in and stitch together with a piece of shaped wood in the handle.

Works great .

This is a fast reply.

Moth leather sofas are of really poor quality leather. The ones that would suit your needs are usually extremely expensive and rigorously maintained, and rarely thrown away because they last forever. The only reason I know that is my former brother in-law owned a leather furniture business for awhile.

While this may not be cheap, if you know any hunters that go for deer, you might ask for the skin and take it to get properly cured/tanned for your purposes and you would have ample deerskin for a lot of fun stuff. Might be worth the investment.
