Part of my problem with them is that my late Mother made them a miserable experience for me. She was wheelchair bound for many, many years and was not the greatest housekeeper in the world, so cooking in her kitchen was difficult at best. When I was a kid we had massive family gatherings, now I am lucky if my kids call me to say anything remotely like Merry Christmas or Happy New Year. My sister is trying to get me back into doing holiday things, but my heart just isn't in it... to me, it is too much fuss for one day. My girlfriend has holiday things, and she tries to understand that I don't like that sort of thing, but it is difficult for her. I don't spend money I don't have on presents, I'm not cheap, I'm poor. If I do get something, it is usually something little, but, for the most part, I put a great deal of thought into it.

Holiday time sucks.

Something's wrong here....clearly some pain.

You need to listen to your girlfriend. (She's right....chics usually are in this kind of shit).

Cheap or poor....something's wrong....hurt. Take a weekend to/by yourself....listen to your pain.

Then let go of it.

You don't have to "be there".

(Trust me on this....I've been there...it's ridiculous....really).

I agree. Family matters always. What I meant, but clearly didn't explain particularly well, is that work and other things can get in the way and Christmas can help to readjust in terms of what really matters.

Likewise, I have an eye for detail. But, there's such a thing as being able to discern the utterly pointless from detail that is useful. So, what's in the shops, I can only surmise as I gave up on them a long time back.

That's great.

For my family, which is geographically diverse (four adult children in four states, parents in yet another), sitting down together requires more intentionality. Holidays definitely do provide us with opportunities to gather, celebrate, and delight in one another's company. It eases logistics a lot that my nieces and nephews are out of school and our employers are amenable to days off.
