Are you taking D2 or D3?

I'm taking 50,000 units (a week) of D2 as prescribed by my asshole doctor.

I forgot to add "a week" into my comment. oops.

Ditch it, D3 is what your body needs

I have no problem switching to D3 but what dosage as I recall D2 and D3 are absorbed by the body differently.

Here's a pretty good picture how it all interlinks...

Difficult to say how your dose should be if you don't know how your levels are, but I would try 5000 units a day, maybe top it up a bit if you don't see a significant difference within a week or two, but you want to have another blood test done in a month or so to make sure you're not overdosing

I'm going to switch the d2 for d3 and keep it at 50,000 a week as I managed to get a feburary appointment, which makes me feel better about switching.

Baldrick -> RE: Thyroid Update (1/16/2016 11:07:53 AM)

I don't have the thyroid issues, but I recently had a kidney transplant, and my medication regiment is somewhat hectic... I am also diabetic, so throw insulin into the mix and all hell breaks loose. I have trouble sleeping, I eat to much, and I have gained about 6kg in the last 3 months or so, but the doctors tell me not to worry, it is the prednisone. They have me down to 10 mg now, but I still eat like 3 people.

If you don't mind me asking, how are you getting on with the steroids and the meds? A friend had a heart transplant a few years ago and I was his care giver, it was freaking exhausting, as he had real roid rages and all that, and the medication always needed to be adjusted, apparently most people after any transplant end up having thyroid problems...

D3 is the form known for being "bioavailable".

After this post, I ended up changing my D2 to D3 and kept with the same dosage as the D2 (50,000 units a week). I then scheduled an appointment with a new endocrinologist so that gave my body 4-6 weeks to try it out and see if it made a difference.

It definitely did. My vitamin D3 is in the normal range (as least for Hashimoto's is concerned) but compared to my previous levels....yeah, the D2 didn't do a damn thing.

Also, my thyroid levels were a little bit low so she upped the synthroid a bit.

I go back to her in a month for a followup and I cannot thank you guys for pointing it out because my last doctor wouldn't even explain anything to me. I had no clue about D2 vs D3 differences.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Thyroid Update (3/16/2016 7:02:14 AM)

You want your D3 in the upper third, and it does help if you supplement B12 as well, also something we Hashis are notoriously low on, my endo explained that the B12 helps to get the T3 to the cells, but our thyroids act like a sponge for D3, plus we are quite prone to being gluten intolerant, it's basically one auto-immune issue attracts others.

I take my B12 with some OJ, as due to the Hashi problem I also have low stomach acid

MistressAubreee -> RE: Thyroid Update (9/13/2016 11:43:26 PM)

I was formally diagnosed when I was like 19 and was on levo for awhile. NO symptoms were changing, despite how I still felt like crap (horrible fatigue and brain fog). We tested my blood to see if it was hashimotos (immune issue dealing with thyroid), it wasn't (thank god). However, I told my doctor I wanted to change to armor (Which is based off of a pig's organs, NOT synthetically made in a lab, like levo is).

Holy shit, it was like night/daydifference. I ended up looking at my genetic code (I've done 23andme, FTDNA) and it turns out my body was "built" to react ti armor better, because it tries to adjust 3-4 components, rather than only 1-2. If you still feel crummy, I STRONGLY recommend attempting armor. Please bare in mind there is the potential risk of your hair falling out (thankfully for me, this did NOT happen).

LafayetteLady -> RE: Thyroid Update (10/28/2016 8:08:04 AM)

I have found the biggest problem is physicians just reacting to the "range" and forgetting that every one is individual and may need to be treated outside of those given ranges.

I had my thyroid removed, and was on 175mcg of levo and felt fine, but it was high in the "ranges" so my previous endo lowered me to 150. I felt like crap. My solution? Change endo's and I explained to my new one that I felt much better at the 175. She agreed that my levels were barely above the "range" and that if I felt better, it was the right way to go. Of course, the constant monitoring is just part of life. Getting my blood work done every three months is vital to my treatment plan so we know where all of my numbers are sitting.

The smartest thing anyone can do for themselves is to learn how to read their blood work results and understand what they mean. Also, if your doctor won't communicate with you the way you want, dump them and find another. Everyone requires different levels of information to be comfortable. Some people blindly (and foolishly) just do whatever their doctor says, and others want as much information as possible. Find one that works with YOUR comfort level. After all, even if you are insured, you are paying them for a service. If they aren't providing the service that makes you happy, why continue to see them?

littleclip -> RE: Thyroid Update (10/30/2016 7:43:37 PM)

LL i do hope you get back in to a balance replacing the thyroid output and having diabetes is very tough keep happy thoughts and communicate with your provider so changes can be made. the extra weight will go after you get the thyroid levels back to your normal. hugs and warm thoughts

LafayetteLady -> RE: Thyroid Update (11/3/2016 12:13:46 PM)

I'm basically back in balance, although people are misguided when they think that will miraculously help with the weight loss. That will always be a struggle, sadly. But it is better than the alternative

Yes, having both the thyroid and diabetes is a daily struggle . Frankly, it's a huge pain in the butt. But it is the hand I was dealt so I do the best I can.

Luckily, I have zero problems communicating with my endocrinologist. If I did, I would find a new one.

thanks for the info, lost my thyroid to cancer last summer-still trying to get it all sorted out.

bowdownx -> RE: Thyroid Update (3/22/2017 10:57:56 PM)

Ayyyy, I've got thyroid issues myself. I'm medicated for hypothyroidism. My gland was swollen although I'm not sure if it still is now. Hold on, you'll find your balance.

Getting anything sorted out with thyroid is a total pain in the neck, but once they do, you feel like new. Some people just need a bit of levo and everything is fine, doesn't work for everybody, for a lot of us a lot of life-style changes are required.

shiftyw -> RE: Thyroid Update (4/6/2017 5:24:16 PM)

I'm hypo thyroid and just got diagnosed with PCOS. (And I'm prediabetic)

Weight watchers and lowering my carbs is all that works. Oh and mad excercise.
But truly I lose so little weight either way I feel like I don't even know what I'm talking about.

DocStrange -> RE: Thyroid Update (4/6/2017 7:46:33 PM)

Shifty,
Have your researched DIM supplement?

DIM (diindolymethane) is a herbal supplement made from cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts). It is touted to help restore hormone levels (estrogen and testosterone) in men and women. It can work as an anti-androgen. It also can act as an aromatase inhibitor. I know how it works in the male body, not so much in the female body.

There is not enough research on this yet for definitive benefits. It seems to work for some people but not all. But it is a natural supplement with little to no side effects. You might try it for 60 days before your next blood test? Some links below and you can also Google it.

shiftyw -> RE: Thyroid Update (4/6/2017 8:17:34 PM)

Literally everything in that is a goitergen though? I don't do well with too many of those (even steamed) because of my goiter.
Thyroid and PCOS are a nutritional landmine- I'll look into it though.

DocStrange -> RE: Thyroid Update (4/7/2017 3:22:48 AM)

DIM is a natural occurring phytochemical, indole-3-carbinol or I3C that gets released during the digestion process when eating cruciferous vegetables. The nice part about DIM supplement is you get much high concentrations of that phytochemical that you could trying to eat the raw vegetable without the side effects. I honestly do not know the female hormone interactions for this supplement. I am well versed on the male anatomy and how it works. I had a hormone imbalance and this helped correct it for me. I actually had to search to find an Endocrinologist is was well versed with DIM. Most are not. But it is a nice alternative for some that is 100% natural.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Thyroid Update (4/7/2017 3:31:45 AM)

Have they reset your adrenal glands and looked into that? That was the first step....

For a while you have to go totally stimulant free (as in no carbonated drinks, no tea or coffee, just herbal teas, avoiding sugar and especially sweeteners, no soy) and a rather basic diet why they reset the adrenal glands, as long as the adrenal glands is off kilter, the thyroid meds don't kick in.

You did mention you're on an NDT in the past, didn't you? Have you considered switching to another brand? For me Armour Thryroid never worked, I'm fine with ERFA or Westhroid, the fillers they use in the pills can really mess you about, but what might mess me about might work great for you. Also a combination of turmeric, selenium and milk thistle tends to help the body, upping D3 and B12, it's a lot of trial and error and seeing what you respond to. The annoying bit is it might work for a while, then you got to change again...
