Oh my, this will stir the shit pot with a huge spoon, and I'll wait for them to be sued for the dirogatory comment about women:

Huh? It's fake? How?

Gauge -> RE: Idaho (3/6/2015 9:25:01 AM)

Well, alrighty then. It is a rated R movie. So, it is OK to serve booze at graphic horror films, but movies with sex scenes in them, you cannot serve booze? Do lawmakers have nothing better to do?

Faux is how some refer to the Fox network.

AlabamaPrincess -> RE: Idaho (3/6/2015 9:35:59 AM)

Oh, well my bad, haha....and yeah, I guess they don't have anything better to do. And don't get me started on the comment about women...ugh

littleladybug -> RE: Idaho (3/6/2015 10:12:20 AM)

Where is the derogatory comment about women? Other than what "moviegoer Michelle Williams" said was her opinion?

The possible (probable?) issue I see with this law is that of "where is the line drawn"? Apparently, "sexually explicit" within the law includes BDSM. This application seems to be fairly clear to me. It might be less clear with other movies though.

Booze laws have always been interesting animals to me. Beginning with the advent of "Blue Laws", it has always seemed to me that the loudest people in the State House win when it comes to the where, when and how of alcohol sales and consumption. I'm not sure if this has changed, but I was in NY at a time where carrying any *opened* bottle of liquor in your car anywhere but in the trunk was illegal. That is, if you were going over to a friend's house with a bottle of previously opened alcohol, it had to be in your trunk. At the same time, you can be in New Orleans and go to a drive thru daiquiri stand, and your drink is considered to be in a "closed container" if the straw is still wrapped.

Here in Washington several years ago, there was a change in the law which has allowed businesses of a certain size to sell hard alcohol. (Previously, hard liquor was only sold in state run stores.)

He or she who has the loudest voice (and most money?) tends to win on these things. Now, to get them changed? You need a louder voice.

In terms of this law in Idaho, I don't see it being on the radar of anyone with deep pockets enough to get it changed. Perhaps if the law is enforced to the extent that it majorly impacts the theatres' bottom lines?

That's what I was referring to. I misread it as that was the reason behind the law. My apologies.

I haven't seen 50 Shades, and I don't plan on it. I don't go to movie theaters and almost never rent movies of any type. So, you could be right about that being strike one.

Faux news? I have to agree with ya on that one.

But I really have to wonder whether you've ever actually been to Idaho, or what you base "strike two" on. Okay, I agree that the Republican party has a stranglehold on the state, and there are so many sheeple that simply follow whatever they are told by the Republicans that there is no end in the foreseeable future. It is because of the Republican leadership (if you can call it "leadership") that we have laws like the one mentioned in the OP.

But the state itself is one of the most beautiful and diverse states in the country. I was born and raised here. I'll admit there have been times that I have considered moving (mostly due to the politics here), but I haven't been able to think of any other state I would rather live in.

No apologies necessary, at all.

The thing is, even if this was the reason behind the law, it's not very likely that a successful lawsuit would ensue.

Again, booze laws being strange animals.

Over the course of many years, "blue laws" have been repeatedly challenged in the courts here in the US. Clearly, these laws were enacted by religious zealots who believed that Sundays should be spent in church and not drinking, and how dare they impose their religious views on others. That whole "Church/state" thing. It seems to me that this should be a no-brainer. Yet, they've been repeatedly upheld because there are "other reasons" for them.

I was stationed at Mt. Home AFB in 1990-1991 so I have a little bit of familiarity with Idaho. I will agree that the stark countryside is absolutely gorgeous. But the nearest city was Boise and they rolled up their sidewalks at 10 on a Saturday night. For a city kid more accustomed to Philly and NYC like me, that was just depressing as all hell.

Agree. I've spent the night in every state in the contiguous US, and Idaho is nothing special in their blue laws. The south is riddled with them, in varying degrees.

CynthiaWVirginia -> RE: Idaho (3/18/2015 2:48:37 AM)

We have only one movie theater in this small town I live in in West Virginia, and last time I checked it didn't sell alcohol. I'm reeling from the shock that we're still waaaaay behind other states like Idaho.

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: Idaho (3/26/2015 3:05:56 AM)

I didn't even know that alcohol was available at some theaters. I've never seen it, but I rarely ever drink so maybe Michigan does and I never noticed. The law in the article is weird, but I've noticed that laws are often weird and leaves me wondering WTF were the people who passed them thinking. Like the law in Louisiana that made having sex with a prostitute a misdemeanor but getting/giving a blowjob a felony.

link removed dear, so you will be waiting alone... nice try though
