Perpetually offended conspiracy /religious theorists on the eclipse and Obamas "iran deal"

One year ago this week, a far-right website popular with some conservatives called WorldNetDaily published an unexpected piece about a lunar eclipse. A right-wing pastor named Mark Biltz told WND that the recently witnessed blood moon – in which Earth’s shadow completely covers the moon – is actually a divine warning against President Obama’s executive actions.

A year later, just in time for another lunar eclipse, WorldNetDaily is back, as is Mark Biltz, and this year, there’s a whole new explanation.
Biltz, reliably, tied the [blood moon] to the nuclear deal with Iran, telling WND that the eclipse was a message from God likening President Obama to the biblical figure Haman, who plotted to kill all the Jews in Persia:
The pastor insisted that developments intended to curtail Iran’s nuclear programs are “totally tied to these Blood Moons.”

It’s worth emphasizing that this isn’t intended as satire. I should also note, once again, that both Blitz and the publishers of WorldNetDaily are welcome to believe whatever they wish about natural, predictable astronomical phenomena. Their interpretations of eclipses are their business, whether those beliefs seem amusing or not.

But there is a broader political significance to stuff like this.

Sure, it’s easy to scoff at foolish stories from strange far-right websites, but WorldNetDaily, despite being on the fringe and publishing odd arguments about eclipses, has been treated as a legitimate outlet by Republican members of Congress.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a prominent presidential candidate, has explored WND conspiracy theories during congressional hearings, and even done interviews with the website as if it were a credible news organization.

As we discussed last summer, it’s entirely possible that there were liberal conspiracy websites that blamed George W. Bush for eclipses and questioned the Republican president’s birth certificate during his White House tenure. But how many Democratic members of Congress – and/or Democratic presidential candidates – chose to associate themselves with such outlets?

Oh and another pastor who preaches
God Wants Men to Rule Women, but They Can’t Without Being Sued
http://latest.com/2015/04/florida-pastor-god-wants-men-to-rule-women-but-they-cant-without-being-sued/

A Florida pastor made it clear during a March 29 sermon that men are destined to lead women, but they are unable to properly do it out of fear of legal action.
Outside of the church, Pastor Bill Lytell posted a sign that read “male leadership.” When asked about it, he justified his decision, saying that “this is a man’s world.”
In addition, a 9-year-old boy found a gun in the church’s bathroom in March. A local media outlet covered the story and also highlighted the problems with the “male leadership” sign.

“And that’s going to go out throughout the whole country. Do you know what we’d have had to pay to do something like that?” he remarked. “That was probably a hundred thousand dollar gift. I’m not going to thank the person that left the weapon, however.”

“Don’t you be ashamed you go to a church with male leadership,” Lytell said. “Every church that’s right with God oughta have a sign: ‘Male Leadership.’ Because that’s the only kind of leadership, both from Adam all the way to the last part of the Bible. It’s all been male. This is a man’s world!”

He suggested that men couldn’t truly lead because they feared being sued for their actions.

“And all the men said, ‘Amen!’” he continued. “There aren’t many places were men can ever rejoice anymore without feeling about half-ashamed because they try to put you down or sue you or something, but brother this is a man’s world. You can say what you want, you can do what you want, but God made Adam in leadership and it’s going to end with a man in leadership. It doesn’t make men better, it is just God’s way.”

with video....

So glad they could fly the flag of such an upright Hunan-rights advocacy nation such as China while making sure that "brute" state Indiana doesn't get away with anything.

the incomplete, misleading and hyperbolic "reporting" aside for a moment---one wonders to what extent the people being "offended" by the Chinese flag would have even been raising any fuss at all had not Washington state "boycotted" Indiana over the recent law passed there.

to me (given my first paragraph), the better candidates for the "perpetually offended" camp here are the huffington post and the anonymous staff writer at news tribune---fox news and tea party, a match made in hell for them. the story could only have been made better if sarah palin were somehow involved.

FOX News is right, China crushes dissidents, massively violates human rights

Indiana is in essence standing up for peoples' rights. No one should be forced by the state to be a part of any ceremony they dont believe in, for the 'privilege' of maintaining the right to do business

mnottertail -> RE: News from the Society for the Perpetually Offended (4/11/2015 6:52:35 AM)

So, we can shut down churches in this world? A great number dont believe in that.

Teens attack woman for "shushing" them in movie theater

A Stroudsburg, Pa., woman suffered a broken eye socket and bruises during the attack, which took place in a local movie theater of all places. And why did the group of teen girls allegedly pounce on victim Cindy Santamaria-Williams? She tells WNEP-TV, which broke the story, that she 'shushed' them for being "loud and cursing." Worse, the attack didn't occur during the heat of the moment inside the theater. The woman tells WNEP that the girls jumped her after the film let out: "They immediately jumped on me and knocked me to the ground, punched me in the face," she said, adding that the original girls were waiting with five other teens.

I guess they were offended.

Don't forget Maxim No 3, though - to recall:

2) You do not get to decide someone else’s intentions. They do.

I hope the judge and the jury remember this when these teens explain their intentions in court - which could have been to forestall a deadly attack by the "victim" on each of them later on (or some other old balls).

Come to think of it, why even have courts? In any given case we could just get the accused to explain his/her intentions and if they sound righteous, he/she should be let off immediately.

3) Being offended is a choice you make. Nobody is responsible for that choice but you.

4) Even if the slight was intended and deliberate, functioning adults understand that they must move on and not dwell over every sideways glance or rude comment.

5) You have to stop doing the trendy internet thing where you write something on a piece of paper and take a picture of yourself holding it up while frowning. It’s just annoying at this point.;

CD, I'm just wondering: have any criticisms of these "maxims" occurred to you, yet?

It's just that, since you copied them out in bold, presumably for our enlightenment here at CM, I'm assuming that you believe them to be perfect - or at least, in their major impact, in their fundamental truthfulness. Is that really the case, for you?

.
Oddly interesting as the "Blood Moon" is the full moon in October. It was called "Blood Moon" as that was the time for slaughter of animals and putting away meat for the winter. Yep, each moon cycle of the year once had a name.

I wonder when someone first started mis-calling a lunar eclipse a "blood moon"?

BTW... "Blue Moon" refers to the second full moon in a calendar month. It doesn't happen often.

bounty44 -> RE: News from the Society for the Perpetually Offended (4/11/2015 4:04:34 PM)

ah, thus the phrase "once in a blue moon"
