My son hated the fact that I wouldn't allow him,as a small boy,to walk to the mens room alone in a public restaurant.

that is just weird.

fear's a bitch

slvemike4u -> RE: Free Range Parenting (4/14/2015 5:02:08 PM)

No,it isn't weird.
My position was how did I know what sort of creep might be in that mens room.
Being a father did not endow me with super powers,the only way to ensure that my son was safe was to follow him in.
Weird,in my mind,is trusting that the local pervert isn't behind that door.

that's fear fucking with you. Did you stand over his bed every night making sure no one abducted him? Did you follow him everywhere he went until he was 18?

slvemike4u -> RE: Free Range Parenting (4/14/2015 5:16:56 PM)

NO,I wasn't an asshole...just a normal concerned parent.
It's amazing how quick any position can be caricatured here on Collarspace.
One could almost assume we were talking about guns,rather than parenting styles.
Mine's raised,he's a completely independent successful young man who has informed me he needs to take me to Europe this summer lest the tax man take too big a bite of his income.
He's 26,lives on his own and ,as I understand it,navigates New York City's public transportation system on a daily basis with no worries.
So I'm thinking,despite my irrational fears,that I did something right [:)]

Our school buses do.

And I'm not sure about the intelligence of parents who would allow a ten year old to walk a six year old unaccompanied from a local park.
Shit happens,and it happens in the blink of an eye,folks actually do lose their children in this country,or hadn't you heard ?

Well, they did get snatched. By the STATE!

By the numbers, there are less kidnappings now than there were when you and I were growing up.

Your own son, turning Republican

Selfishly spending the governments hard-stolen money overseas

Perhaps you should be held responsible

slvemike4u -> RE: Free Range Parenting (4/14/2015 5:30:58 PM)

He's a dedicated liberal who pays all of his taxes but like most normal people does take every legal means to minimize his hit.
Are you suggesting doing so makes his liberalness less ?

Marini -> RE: Free Range Parenting (4/14/2015 6:06:58 PM)

I live about an hour away from where this situation occurred.

The children live in what is considered a fairly safe/and well-to-do neighborhood.

The children had a curfew, and were walking home on the sidewalk in a residential neighborhood.
*The local news states the children live about a third of a mile from the park.
That is not a long way to walk in your own neighborhood.*

The whole situation is over the top.

As in many situations, I really see both sides here.

I can understand a parent NOT allowing children under 12 to walk down the block without supervision, but at what point will the government become involved in every decision that people are allowed to make?

I fully KNOW what a dangerous world we live in.
I would love to keep my young people in the basement until they are 30, but is that best for their growth?

I would like to know if they children had a cell phone in their possession.
I would feel better if they had a phone and could immediately call 911 if approached/or propositioned by strangers.

Despite the fact that violent crime — including crime against children — has been declining for decades, hysterical, sensationalized media coverage in the 24-hour news cycle makes it seem like every community is a crime-infested ghetto with hundreds of predators roaming the streets looking for unsupervised children to rape, kidnap, and murder. Parents who reject the false “danger everywhere!” narrative and allow their children to walk down the street or play in the park without a parent hovering nearby are judged as neglectful. What used to be considered normal parenting — letting kids play outside without supervision — is now cause for removal of children from the home...

Here’s the problem: Parents like the Meitivs, who reject helicopter parenting and allow their children a little more freedom, are taking a different kind of risk. While statistically their children are going to return home from the park unmolested by murderers and rapists, nothing can protect them from the busybodies who call the police to report an unaccompanied child and the resulting interactions with police and county social workers who are going to be looking for reasons to teach these parents a lesson about their “free-range” parenting style...

The thought that social workers can pluck a child out of his home for not attending government schools or that police can grab a child off the street for the crime of playing in a park without a parent is truly astounding — and terrifying.

lol, but, but I would allow them to finish college AND work full time.
They could have company down there, I would even let them go out.
You can be productive and live in the basement.

I understand wanting to feel that your children are SUPER SAFE.
How much parental control are parent's losing these days?

bounty44 -> RE: Free Range Parenting (4/14/2015 7:03:32 PM)

an insightful comment from the comments section of the article above:

"Me 2.0
Sheltered people seek the Collective for protection. Those who can stand on their own are not interested in the Collective. Thus, we need to shelter our children, lest they reject the Collective."

I don't know that I necessarily agree with the "sheltered" part---but I find the rest to be tenable.

DOM68005 -> RE: Free Range Parenting (4/14/2015 7:04:00 PM)

I am older than most here. I have no doubt that my childhood at that age was different than today for many. I was the eldest of three. I was held responsible by my parents for my sister and later my brother. We traveled by bus independently to the military base recreation facilities. We went to school on our own. I went to the market for Mom by myself before I was out of the first grade.
My parents felt with proper instruction, it taught responsibility and judgment. I agree. No - I do not have children.
That said, in my part of the country, we call the government's child protective services "children's abuse network". Was this a clear case of kidnapping by the law enforcement involved? YES in no uncertain terms. Around here, they don't give the kids back unless you go to their way of thinking classes and attend their version of AA for parenting. It is a living hell on the kids too.
How do I know? For eight years, I was a taxi driver. One of the services our taxi company provided was to transport the kids from the foster homes to school and the various places the state wanted the kids to go. It included indoctrination to their way of thinking. The kids were taught how to smoke by the kids they were placed with. Foster parents often provided the smokes. Many were introduced to undesirable behaviors by the kids they were placed with. Some got pregnant while in the care of the state.
Are there cases where they may be better off out of their real homes? a few.
Is this a case where the authorities should be criticized for their misbehavior? ABSOLUTELY.
If I had any input, I would fire and jail them. I'd throw away the key. Lucky for then, I don't have that say.

Welp... that settles it... we need to change the "So very innocent" to "So very naïve".

Jus sayin

You know I am playing with you, but it is very, very hard to let go.

I think you have to know how mature, capable and responsible your children are.
I don't see this as a one size fits all issue.
As I said earlier, I can see BOTH sides, but I am on the parent's side on this one.
