ARIES83 -> Hmmm BDSM + Whisky = Real Man? (4/24/2015 10:14:00 PM)

I was sitting here pondering whether or not to bring this up in my whisky thread.[:D]
In my whisky related travels throughout the internet, I stumbled across this website...
(View on a PC not mobile as it displays differently and the BDSM thing I'm talking about doesn't seem to show up.)
http://www.realmendrinkwhiskey.com/

First off, something that says "Real Men [blank] [blank]" (fill in the blanks with anything) makes me roll my eyes... I'm not a fan of macho BS. But I was prepared to sift through the site to see what it had to offer... Imagine my confusion when it started mentioning "BDSM Coaching" and had articles on 50 Shades of Grey.

The site seems to just be some weird endeavour by a self styled man-guru called Sean Lind. But apart from that it's left me with some legitimate questions.

What is BDSM in the eyes of the average guy now? A dominant demeanour was perhaps always a masculine ideal just as being well muscled and having facial hair is a physical expression of masculine ideal of sorts... But BDSM isn't dominance. I feel like the cultural male ideal post 50 shades, has expanded to include sexual deviation in some way. But I don't know, I'm a bit confused that's for sure.

Is whisky a "man drink"? I've seen crystal decanters of whisky used several times in the movies, to help to denote manliness and success, in scenes often accompanied hardwood décor... But all my research on using decanters for whisky so far seems to suggest that it's best not to, for various reasons including oxygenation of the whisky... If the decanter itself is a cultural artefact associated with success and perhaps manliness. It stands to reason that whisky might very well be too. Making the "real men drink whisky" thing turn from being embarrassing to amusing in my mind.
And that begs the question... is cheap wine a woman drink?[:D]

I don't know. I think it's a catchy name for a site and I can understand why he chose it, given the content on the site. It's his interpretation of what a real man drinks, and his site is about his interpretation of how a man acts. I like the name. I would click on it. So at least in some ways, the name is successful (i.e. clickable).

I can't say that I've considered whiskey in particular to be a man's drink. But I do associate ...manliness, I guess...with the ability to handle a strong drink. That's more about me than men. I can't handle strong liquor at all. So as far as I'm concerned, I consider it a formidable achievement if a man is able to toss something back that I am unable to. And I like formidable men. So yes, there's an association there for me, though not particularly with whiskey alone.

I just think a real man can have anything to drink without turning in to a complete twat, assuming he wasn't one in the first place of course. my next door neighbour can't handle alcohol of any sort, and is a complete waste of space as a male when he does. I wouldn't put up with him, but then again his partner leaves a lot to be desired too.

Personally a real man is one who can handle his "drink" without fighting, hitting people, getting mouthy, and acting stupid. I now hate being around drunk stupid people, male or female, it irritates the shit outta me. But im not anti alcohol, im anti ignorant dipshits, so I choose not to deal with them.

My dad taught me how to drink whisky and lots of it.....a mere "girl" drinking a alcoholic scotsman or two under the table came in handy quite a few times. Of course, I have done stupid, fun, dangerous stuff "under the affluence of inkahol occifer" but nowadays, Im just tooo old to get a kick out of a hangover and waking up in cupboards, baths and strange places.

been there done that, it has nothing to do with "real men" but I just dont find drunk people fun to be around any more.
YMMV

The concept of "Real Men" is all to often really "Reel Men" as in movie tropes.

Interesting replies. I couldn't agree more about not being able to handle your alcohol being unmanly. I tend to look down on guys who behave badly when drunk. Although I probably associate handling your alcohol more with having grown up than being a man per se.

I see being able to handle the effects of alcohol on your behaviour as an experience and maturity thing. But Kaliko points out an interesting aspect of being able to drink strong stuff which I think is more closely associated to manliness in some way. Perhaps it suggests an aspect of toughness.

Wouldn't that make it an indication the individual lacks maturity instead of masculinity?

Heh, coming from a big family of reasonably heavy drinkers (back in the 60s n 70s) it was spirits at home with the ladies, but definitely not the sherry they were drinking... and beer down the pub.
toughness.. In a way, it taught me that being able to drink and not get into trouble, unless I was in the mood for it, was a good thing.
It got me out of a few issues. and into some others, lol
With regards to BDSM n whisky I wont play n drink
Regarding Men n BDSM n Whisky....I do[:)] enjoy the company of men who are kinky and know their whisky, dom and sub.

Probably, though I suppose I consider maturity a requisite for manliness, and not the other way around. I tend to make a distinction between being male and being a man, so I'm probably just as bad as the "Real men drink whiskey" guy, in that regard.

In a way, things like that make a person more interesting. To me anyway. Perhaps I find decadence interesting. [:D]
