Greetings all,

I was curious as to whether there were any members of the community who were proficient in rope bondage, preferably shibari and whether or not those that are would be willing to offer some mentoring.

I have rope and know basic ties, but with no means of venturing off to a workshop, I figured I'd investigate the likelihood of finding others that enjoy interacting with other like minded men. If so, I look forward to communicating with others interested in this type of bondage.

Can I ask you why Shibari?

IMO apart from the basics, its a very difficult thing to teach online. I would suggest you invest in some decent reading materials

http://esinem.com/shop I personally know Esinem and would say he's one of the better Shibari practitioners. He concentrates a lot of his work on health and safety research. There is also plenty to learn from his site http://esinem.com/news/incomplete-understanding-of-the-box-tie

Douglas Kent has lots of good reading material for novices http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Shibari-Volume-Douglas-Kent/dp/0973668814

Whilst Midori is the queen of Shibari in the Western world, unless you can attend her workshops, which are still pretty advanced, I wouldn't invest in her instructional material, at least not yet.

Be prepared to spend money though because none of these books come cheap.

If you are in or near Toronto
Check out Morpheous.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Morpheous
he can be found on fetlife
Lovely man and does an awesome spectacular bondage show.

Chanta Rose ...book Bondage for sex is a good book and of course the Two Knotty boys, also brilliant
you can download the vids here .http://www.knottyboys.com/code/downloads.php

I totally agree with Esinem, being amazing too
Midori s work is good, too but she is expensive workshop wise. Again I agree with Maria:) what a suprise!!!

Thank you both.

@Maria B

I chose shibari because it's a little more satisfying to tie then to step back and admire.
I don't have a more worthy reason behind it. I like how everything looks after you've put your head down to construct it all and then back away to take it all in.

That said, I am practicing basic ties over and over. It's not quite the work of art yet, but I will ensure to invest in the reading material suggested.
The Two Knotty Boys tutorials are my usual reference points as of now. I will look up the other suggestions.

I appreciate the advice from both of you and welcome anyone else's.

I will also add that if there are any practitioners in the South Florida region, then I would entertain the idea of gathering to discuss rope and shibari as well as learn from anyone more experienced than myself.

I'd hardly call myself "proficient." I'm in the same boat as you, actually.

Shibari has nice aesthetics but I'd avoid falling into the trap of measuring all forms of rope bondage/art against purist shibari. There's a lot of elitism in the scene that, IMO, turns off or intimidates a lot of new interest.

I'm in south Florida too and while I'm not too familiar with how active the rope scene is down your way, I know there's some good talent in the area and I know there's gotta be SOMETHING. If you're on Fet, check out local groups.

Good luck to you.

Thank you RockaRolla.

I'll do some investigating and take heed to your advice.

@Lucylastic

Though I am not exactly new, I haven't been on for a long time. I had simply found another site and stopped investing in this one. While I am not all too active online, hopefully I can find some good interactions while here.

He's in your state. I'd see if he's doing a workshop anywhere you can get to at some point. We took a two day workshop a couple of years ago when he was in the area. Very informative, very accessible, and he's a nice man.

Since you can't get to workshops . . . have you read the books on the topic or watched the zillion instructional videos online?

I would suggest sticking as much as possible with Japanese sources of instruction if you can, even if you don’t know the language. For me, Western approaches to shibari instruction often are lacking in transmitting the magical je ne sais quoi combination of poetry and suffering that is so essential to a quality shibari experience, in my view. Westerners tend to be too absorbed in the purely technical, numerological aspects of the discipline, to the exclusion of its evocative, darkly poetico-erotic nature that is an essential part of shibari at its highest level as I see it.

@ResidentSadist

Not quite a zillion, but I make a habit of coming home and allotting about 45 minutes to an hour of learning right after I sit down and check my email.

I used this one on Star when I started out. It helps to have a patient subject one who earnestly wants you to succeed and will love to support you in that success. A book like this and a great subject to practice on, both recommended.

This looks like a good book to have.
Thank you for the suggestion.

Awesome. I learned a great deal by reading. It made me more comfortable and gave me greater understanding when I saw it in person or practiced at a workshop.

Workshops, classes, play parties.... Go do it Hands On.... Videos, books, internet are great... but actually holding ropes in your hand as you are taught how to do it SAFELY is the best way.

There are too many things that can wrong doing rope bondage incorrectly..... the risks are too great. Would you do the brakes on your car based solely on YouTube videos???
