that's why I said about them keeping an "absolute minimal hand" but I understand your point aylee---and heck, even that is more evidence of that it should be privatized, most especially since they (congress) are failing at their job and costing the country dollars that could be better spent elsewhere.

the retaining of power, when opportunities exist to divest oneself of it, I think should often be viewed with suspicion.

it seems only in govt can failed business models/practices perpetually exist.

I am all for the dissolution of the usps from the government and while keeping an absolute minimal hand in the mix, allowing the postal services do be done by private enterprise.

That is actually one of Congress's enumerated powers. Do you REALLY think that they are going to give it up?

I know it's going to sound humorous, but, just because they are allowed to do it doesn't mean they should.

And just because it is enumerated and thus allowed doesn't mean it has to take the current form.

Well, yes.

I am going to surprise a few people, here.

I do NOT want the USPS privatized.

The best man at my wedding (who used to be my best friend) worked for the USPS for 30 years. So, while I never worked there, I "know" a few things.

I want the USPS completely re-vamped. Maybe bring in someone that used to run FedEx or one of the other competitors.

I want them to cut the dead wood; not from the letter carriers but from the bureaucracy. The carriers really are over-worked, more often than not. The fault lies in all the layers of "supervisors" and the hangers-on that suck at the government teat who really serve no useful purpose.

Ever since e-mail became a standard, the USPS has been in danger. We all knew it. We all saw it coming. Instead of re-adjusting to an open market, the government did what it always does; taxed us more to prop up a failing entity. That communication tax that went into effect on your cable/interweb/phone bill, 10-15 years ago? Most of that goes to subsidize the USPS. It was the first step to Big Brother taxing the interwebz.

To my knowledge, no one can send a letter as cheaply as the USPS still can. Sure, you can put an envelope into a FedEx 3-Day pouch. That's $9.00? If you removed all the office post masters and regional post masters and area post masters and ... you could afford to hire more carriers (and re-open more of the closed offices). My zip code doesn't have a local post office but we still have a post master for that zip code. Efficient? Hardly.

Why stop with the USPS? Let's get rid of 10% of middle management at all government entities. Including schools and colleges. That would be a start.

Also very true.

I'm in, but why stop at 10%? I'll bet there's somewhere close to 50% bureaucratic bullshit going on. I'll meet you "halfway" at 25%.

Anyone else? What am I bid?

I wanted to start wit 10% because that should get rid of the worst of the worst. THEN we can move on to what is not needed. But yeah, too much bureaucracy.
