I gave up on this forum a while ago, it's just the same old shit being peddled around and around, right wingers spouting their biased rubbish, left wingers spouting their biased rubbish. I don't think that any of the thousands and thousands of posts here have changed any ones opinions about anything.

I logged on tonight and had a read and just thought what a waste of time.

What's going to happen if you "win"?

Fuck all, the number of people who witness your "win" is going to be in double figures at best, at worst, no one.

No one.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like a fruitless circle jerk. If you truly believe your idea or view is going to make the world a better place then put it out somewhere where it might make a difference.

All the anger and vitriol that so many posters seem to have is just piss in the wind.

Why do you do it?

It's something like chess, though there's no point to that either except possibly an exercise for the mind.

Better than chess though, there are exponentially more dimensions to be considered

And it's a way to shrink the world down a bit whether we mean to or not

"An unexamined life is not worth living."

If I can't properly justify my own beliefs, maybe it's because they're wrong.

Not likely, but still.

DesideriScuri -> RE: What's the point? (5/26/2015 6:41:01 PM)

I can honestly say I've learned a lot about other countries, other customs, and what others think of the US. Because of this forum, I've learned a lot about the US, the Constitution, the Declaration, etc.

A lot of it is the same old shit. There are also new things that pop up, every once in a while. I have a select few on "Hide" and that has increased my enjoyment of the boards immensely.

I like to discuss politics. I don't care for a lot of arguing. I don't have anyone around me that I can truly discuss politics with. Most of the people around me have a "sound bite" level of understanding only.

If you don't care to be on here, by all means, stop showing up. Remember, just because it's not your thing, doesn't mean it can't be someone else's thing.

Best of luck to you and yours.

Good post Sanity... I often think of the debates here as a mind exercise. We live with our thoughts and opinions and it is always interesting to compare our way of thinking with others. Sure we know most of the time the general response we will get from various people... But every now and then they surprise us and that is interesting.

We can't all know all things of all subjects so I often learn from others knowledge. This does not mean I agree with them but I do learn... And... it is fun to get under the skin of another now and then...after all this is a BDSM site.

Personally, I learn more about what is going on in politics by reading these forums than I do watching the news on TV. You hear both sides of an issue, often from people that are hardline on one side or another, but also from people that are more middle-of-the-road. Once you know who the hard cases are you take what they have to say with a grain of salt, but they do sometimes have something worthwhile listening to. As for myself, sometimes I'll be moved to add my own 2 cents worth, but rarely let myself get dragged into a nonsensical back and forth argument that goes nowhere. I say what I have to say and leave it at that . . . take it or leave it.

MrRodgers -> RE: What's the point? (5/26/2015 10:10:54 PM)

Actually, I think it is at least where politics is concerned, I try to point out how things have changed and how less thoughtful some of the presumptions lead people.

For example, many think I am a centrist, some a liberal and yet one poster thought I had defended everything right wing. I am glad to tell them...they are all wrong. Like it's been said, I must be doing something right when sometimes...everybody disagrees.

I like to poke holes in peoples' theory and also like, as an old-school conservative who has read all of the older conservative intellects, that the new right is not 'my father's right wing.'

I truly believe what has happened, is that there is a mythical conservatism espoused today and a real conservatism written of from the past that the modern debate is not supposed to know. It would truly ruin their day and maybe their arguments.

I have also learned from these posts and the research I've done, that the original American creed is dead and we can now truly not believe almost anything meaningful of the modern press and our govt. no matter who or what party...is in office.

I am convinced now more then ever, that there is a 'power behind the thrown' as had been said throughout the last two centuries and that nothing of any real substance will ever change.

Writing helps me order my thoughts and hear what some others have to say, a few others. I never consider it a contest to "win" since there is nothing to "win" here that I am interested in. I never got Star by being in the message boards. I never entered the boards until I won that prize already. So for me, winning takes place somewhere else.

But I can see this is me, not everyone. Some might be seriously interested in these debates for daily social interaction, perhaps one they cannot obtain on their side of the keyboard for whatever reason, perhaps they are homebound or simply lonely or are just extroverted enough to seek out all the contact they can get with others. Perhaps they just like to argue. Perhaps some even are trying to attract a mate.

That is all "winning" as long as it means something to them and I understand that and also understand that desire makes them vunerable to being trapped here.

But that does not affect me negatively and indeed it kept some of them off the other side leaving more beautiful women there more time for me. So I guess I won in a manner of speaking because some worked very hard to win on this side, on the message boards.

That is how the game is won by guys like me sometimes.

Most of my friends have more than a "sound bite" level but if you only talk to people who agree with you, you don't grow.

Precisely. That's why I'm here.

There are quite a number of people who come and go lurking but not posting. It seems to me that they're the ones who would be most likely influenced by what they read. I doubt that most of the more opinionated posters will change their minds much about anything. I also, like DS pointed out, have learned a thing or too.

ETA I voted for I like an argument.

Wayward5oul -> RE: What's the point? (5/27/2015 3:30:05 PM)

I am more the lurker type, rather than poster. I have no interest in trying to reason with some of the people on here, because I don't think that they can be reasoned with.

And it does get tiring watching the various threads turn into the same old argument every time.

But sometimes it is entertaining to watch peoples' heads explode.

And like some of the other replies have already stated, I do learn from the 'debates'. I can read news stories all day long, but I don't get to discuss much with people who believe differently than I do. It helps to keep perspective and see what other people think and feel and their reasons for it.

But I may nonetheless have to investigate the 'hide' feature.

You are more likely to get sound bytes on the news than on here.
We have had a couple of posters on here who I challenge just to keep them talking so people like you ("lurkers") can see the lack of thought that goes into their positions.

Lucylastic -> RE: What's the point? (5/27/2015 5:48:14 PM)

oh dear...

LipstickLeuger -> RE: What's the point? (5/27/2015 6:22:21 PM)

Why do I post here?

I am interested in human in general and love a lively debate. It helps to open my mind to others ideas as I hope my ideas and opinions open theirs a bit. I like to state my opinion an have others actually think about it a bit and hopefully answer it thoughtfully and we both get to learn something from each other. Well, that's my hope anyhow.

Believe me, lack of thought comes through loud and clear. Some people need no help showing that.

But if you hang in long enough to muddle through all of that, there is some interesting debate to be considered. I get to see perspectives that I may not get to run into at all in my little world, which is a healthy thing.

True but sometimes it helps to have someone explain what they are thinking. And if I have misjudged them I can find out.
