She hated his Mother and her nightmare visits. Her constant criticism she took in silence, groaning inwardly at the snide remarks; but most hurtful of all was he never defended her. No, he just smiled and nodded – it was so unfair!
It was only a matter of time before she snapped, and when she did it silenced the room. It was inevitable, all through lunch that harridan of a mother had been pushing her until she just had to let rip.
Whatever relief she felt by her outburst was overtaken by a new shock, he had risen from the table, grabbed her by the arms and dragged her unceremoniously from the room.
He took her into the kitchen, pushed her into the corner and left her there, broken and unwanted.
His family continued their lunch while his triumphant Mother proclaimed she was ‘not good enough for her son.’ It took her last measure of pride to keep her feet planted firmly in the corner, she wasn’t going to give that horrible woman the satisfaction of whimpering or drawing attention to herself.
Soon her nemesis left, and at last the house fell quiet. She hoped he would come and comfort her; everyone has limits could he not understand that?
Instead he went to the phone.
‘Has become very slack lately,’ she heard him say, ‘I need this sorted. Yes, across the bottom, no, not cane, it’s time for something stronger, can you bring leather straps?’
She cringed at the matter of fact way he discussed her, and the humiliating thought of being turned over, legs in the air, her bottom exposed for all to see.
The wait was interminable until finally the doorbell rang and a man entered with thick leather straps poised in his hand. He stood before her, admiring her fine legs and delicate arms. Then came unexpected kindness, ‘My, that’s a fine old dining chair’ said the Upholsterer, ‘She’s had some rough treatment, but I’m sure these leather webbings will fix her as good as new.’
