I don't know if I've missed something or what, but I've noticed this phrase come up a lot lately: "Is that a thing?"

I'm assuming that, by "thing," it's not referring to a parasitic extraterrestrial lifeform that assimilates other organisms and in turn imitates them. And it probably doesn't refer to the helping hand in a box on "The Addams Family."

I agree. It's the latest in stupid verbal quips.

That particular phrase has been in use for some considerable time. I pretty certain I first encountered it in, of all things, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and have heard people using it ever since. My assumption has always been that the phrase was in regional use and popularized by the show.

Also popular now:

"Yeah, so that happened."

Really. It's a thing.

If from The Thing from 1982 can be remade as The Thing in 2011, I guess the thing can be a thing in 2015.

"It's a real thing. Snopes shows it is" is the original way I heard that used and the last couple of years "it's a thing" meaning it can be verified as part of this reality instead of fictional Hollywood reality.

I hear more use of "It's not a thing" actually. Like terrorists making a nuclear power plant into an atomic bomb is NOT a thing.
