Outcry over Hamilton's possible demotion has been somewhat lost in the wave of excitement over the inclusion of a woman's portrait on paper currency. The Treasury Department says the $10 bill was chosen because it's up next for a redesign to improve anti-counterfeiting features. The new bill would go into circulation in 2020.

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said this week that he's sticking with the plan, despite critics arguing that a woman should be featured on the $20 bill in place of Andrew Jackson, whom many historians view less favorably because of his treatment of Native Americans and his ownership of slaves.

"Right now is the time to call that out," says Barbara Howard, founder of the group Women on 20s, which advocates replacing Jackson with a deserving woman from history. Doug Hamilton has joined forces with Howard's group and others trying to change Lew's mind.

Meanwhile, former Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke wrote in a blog that he was "appalled" at the idea of adding a woman to the $10 bill at Hamilton's expense. The New York Times wrote in a Fourth of July editorial that it's a much better idea to bump Jackson, an undistinguished president who, ironically, hated the idea of paper currency.

Hamilton's descendant started a group which supports having a woman on paper currency, but doesn't think it should be done at Hamilton's expense. The feeling is that Jackson should be the one who should be replaced on the $20 bill.

So, put a female on the $10 bill and then replace Jackson with Hamilton on the $20.

Sounds like that would work, too.

Put the female on the $2 bill and leave the others alone. Not many people would remember WHO is on the $2 bill, so he wouldn't be missed

It should really be the Jackson $5.

I remember reading somewhere (Mad Magazine, I think) about a proposal to create a $3 bill with Nixon on it.

Maine's own Margaret Chase Smith is one of the proposed women to be placed on the bill. However I do agree Hamilton should stay and Jackson should be replaced.

Whose says we have to use pre-existing currency? Why not the $30? $40? $70? $150?

"I just gave over one bill to pay for my medical expenses. At a $100,000, you'd think I'd remember whom was on the picture, right?"

Most people do not know there is a spider on the $1 bill.....

KenDckey -> RE: Movement to keep Hamilton on the $10; bump Jackson off the $20 (7/10/2015 10:55:19 AM)

There used to be a $3 bill. Actually several various kinds back in the mid 1800's In the Past there was also a 3 cent coin.

Just wait around for a whle, until our chickens come home to roost. Then we could put Hillary or Warren on ten trillion dollar bills (just before theyre worth a little less than toilet paper)

yeh instead of getting rid of the asshole [hamilton] that created an umbilical cord between this country and the illegitimate banking cartel, they want to remove the only pres [jackson] who kicked the European banks out and balanced the budget in our history.

Yep, Jefferson was on the $2 bill.
Keep Jackson, scrap Hamilton.

And.. which bill has Grover Cleveland? <grin>

Although I came across an earlier $20 bill which had Cleveland on it. Hamilton was on the $1000 bill at some point, too. They've done a lot of switching around.
