http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/mexico-drug-lord-el-chapo-guzman-escapes-through-tunnel/ar-AAcSnRL

quote:

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The capture of drug lord Joaquin Guzman was the crowning achievement of President Enrique Pena Nieto's government in its war against drug cartels, a beacon of success amid domestic woes. That makes the bold escape by "El Chapo" from a maximum security prison all the more devastating.

A widespread manhunt that included highway checkpoints, stepped up border security and closure of an international airport failed to turn up any trace of Guzman by late Sunday, more than 24 hours after he got away.

Widely considered the world's richest and most powerful drug trafficker before his capture last year, Guzman slipped down a shaft from his prison cell's shower area late Saturday and disappeared into a sophisticated mile-long (1.5 kilometer-long) tunnel with ventilation, lighting and a motorcycle apparently used to move dirt.

"All the accolades that Mexico has received in their counter-drug efforts will be erased by this one event" if Guzman is not recaptured, said Michael S. Vigil, a retired U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration chief of international operations.

More than anything else, the escape undermined Mexico's assertion it can deal with top drug lords at home and doesn't need to extradite them to the U.S.

Apparently, the escape tunnel was built over the past year right under the authorities' noses. Just when it seemed like the cartel war was winding down.

Good point

Perhaps someone should check the White House, see if the poor little dreamer has found refuge there yet

I wouldn't doubt that Guzman is staying in the Mexican equivalent of the Lincoln Bedroom. Money talks in corrupt Ole Mehico

They'd probably have better luck finding him on Wall Street.

Unfortunately, this is true. I don't know how many people they had to bribe in order to be able to spend a year digging an escape tunnel - and quite an elaborate one at that. It wasn't like Charles Bronson in The Great Escape. I also saw an interview with a retired Federal agent who was wondering how dedicated the Mexican government would be to find this guy, since he would know which officials had taken bribes.

Actually, I heard he is property manager on the Bush family's 2000 acre estate in Bolivia.

And now El Chapo has managed to tweet about Trump while on the run. LOL

And the specs I read about the tunnel...there is no way they didn't know it was being built.

Edited to add: Trump has reported this to the FBI.

As elaborate as the tunnel is, officials are saying that they would have had to have the blueprints for the prison before El Chapo was even sent there. Talk about thinking ahead.

Yes, free speech should always be silenced by the heckler's/bully's/drug lord's veto.

On the other hand, why would Guzman even give a dead rat's ass about what Donald Trump or any other person in the media says?
