BamaD -> James Holmes guilty on all 165 counts. (7/16/2015 7:33:23 PM)

I don't need to add much at this point.
Next the jury contemplates death penalty.

cloudboy -> RE: James Holmes guilty on all 165 counts. (7/16/2015 7:49:29 PM)

The question was whether he was sane or not. The Prosecution argued that his high level of scheming, preparation, and planning demonstrated that he knew what he was doing and was of a sound, deliberate mind.

From my reading, Holmes was ONE COLD DUDE. He's a very scary, mass murderer. He remains 100% indifferent to what he did and he ruined many lives on a bender. Luckily his gun jammed.

Interesting how the "insanity" plea was defeated. It wasn't that he didn't have a mental illness, but that he wasn't insane. That is, he knew what he was doing, and he knew it was wrong.

Agreed.

He got life without parole

I know it is tough for some family members to take but to me there is no doubt..he is nuts... and life is more appropriate than the death penalty. If he did this for profit or revenge for instance it would be different.

Imagine if this nation had a tough stance on gun ownership. From sale to point of use and all things in between. This guy would not have been about to acquire the gun. Which would therefore prevent him from doing as much damage. All those who lost their lives, would be around today. This guy, might eventually have done wrong to someone, but on a small scale (nor injured or killed). Picked up by the police and jailed. Or gotten the help he needed.

BUT....

Our society is one that allows a greater freedom to obtaining and using firearms, than mental/emotional health centers, doctors, and therapists. That we are perfectly 'happy' to know we are just days if not weeks from....ANOTHER....mass shooting. That we go through a period of faking tears and shit, then pound our chest and say "thank God for the 2nd amendment!". That placing more guns in the open will solve the problems rather than heighten them. That we assume only nut-cakes go on mass shootings, and ignore the many each day that die by those 'honest and law abiding' citizens. Particularly in road rage moments....

And we want to say this guy is psychotic, insane and/or cold?

I realize you don't know it, but you're only speaking for yourself.

Actually, only nut-cakes try to make everything a gun thread.

Which shows just how well and deeply firearms are tied into the American culture. Haven't brought up firearms on many topics. I can bring it up on this topic, because what did Holmes use to kill people? Come on, let's here the bullshit....

No but you seem to live for them.
How do you know, your unbridled wisdom.
Or your willingness to sacrifice lives to help your political ends.
Your obsession with making everything about guns is worrisome.

Or, he would have built a bomb and taken out the whole building. Bombs are easier to make than guns.

And we know he had the expertise to make bombs, his apartment was boobie trapped.

I don't think we need to make this a gun thread to be able to look at if & how additional safety precautions are being taken at movie theaters, or anywhere else people congregate for fun.

Our local theater has had an off duty police officer working Thursday openings and all weekend long since this happened. They bring in an additional officer or two for movies that are supposed to be really big, or that may be sensitive/problematic.

A simple solution to ward off evil, without a lot of fuss, but it deserves recognition.

Ok sounds good.
Only Joe wants to make this a gun thread.

So don't take the bait. Holmes has severe mental health issues and sought treatment before the shooting.

Even the staunchest gun fanatic would agree that this man had no business having access to a firearm, even if he did have the right to own them.

The psychiatrists dropped the ball on this one.

You are only 2 years behind me on that one.
Still doesn't make this a gun thread.
He shouldn't have gotten it under today's laws which is why so many of us say let's enforce today's laws before we pass more to not enforce.

bounty44 -> RE: James Holmes guilty on all 165 counts. (8/8/2015 12:16:55 PM)

i remarked elsewhere, I often wonder why/how such cases take years, as opposed to just weeks, or even days...

JVoV -> RE: James Holmes guilty on all 165 counts. (8/8/2015 12:25:00 PM)

Evidence has to be collected & tested, then reviewed by prosecutors and defense attorneys.

How can either side make sense of something like this in a matter of weeks?

Guilt was never a question. The question was why. Insanity or mental defect must be proven as a defense. That means psychiatric evaluation and possibly treatment.

This case could have been resolved earlier, if the prosecutor would have accepted a plea deal for a life sentence. Instead, he chose to go through a trial to seek the death penalty.

Butch

He did want revenge, in the words of Doc Holliday in Tombstone, for being born.
