lilninotchka -> Serious bruising, under skin bleeding? (7/17/2006 2:13:39 AM)

A question that perhaps will find an answer. The topic on lactation caused it to think someone here may actually be able to answer this (DUH, right? lol)

There are certain places, breasts, shins, front of the hip joint (right in the crease) where, if it happens to get struck there with even mild force, it appears to bleed under the skin. The skin is not broken, but swelling happens rather quickly and it is a very pretty shade of blue. After the swelling goes down, there is a rather dark black 'bruise' that lasts for weeks. Is bleeding really what is happening? Not a good thing if that is the case, is it? After discovering this, it is careful not to let it happen, but just tripping over a footstool can cause it so it is not always easily avoided. What are possible complications arising from something like that? Any information would be greatly appreciated as it hasn't a doctor to ask these questions of.

'It' had best find a doctor, that sort of bruising shouldn't be ignored, or treated with free advice from the internet.

Well, it isn't being ignored, nor is it being treated with free advice from the internet. So, everything seems to be in order so far...

A bruise is a break in the small blood vessels which leak under the skin.  In general a healthy person.. <and I emphasize "general" > is not going to suffer any long term health issues from a bruise.
Medications, auto immune disorders, bleeding disorders and a myriad of other conditions  are just some of the exceptions.
You may find your answer in the following links:

Here are a few links that may answer your question. Of course, as noted in the articles, some bruises may require medical intervention.

The bruise you are referring to is called a hematoma.  A pool of blood forming under the skin due the the broken capillaries.
Ice on it a few times a day should help get rid of it faster.
Though as other's have already mentioned, if you are that worried about it I would ask my doctor.
At the very least do a search on hematoma's on the internet.

you really need to see a doctor about this. It might be nothing but it could also be some sort of deficiency that you have.
