I would say that 95% of the fakes are obvious. I try to make all my fakes not obvious, so, I've studied them. But even then, people figure it out. Smart people that is. The dumb ones (like the OP and his 3 consort socks), never figure it out.

The only gotcha is that you need to ensure they're smaller than about 640x480, and that the picture is CS friendly.

This is an interesting observation.
I do get a message once in a while from a scammer, but, I simply block and hide and move on.
Once in a while, they tell me to go offsite, which is almost always a scam, and when I do that, the first message is a dead giveaway, so, I just delete and ignore.
I think, however, most of the scammers are actively sought by the scammee. Only the poster can say for sure, but, I suspect the scammers put out the honey pot first, and wait for the idiot to contact them. I think the scammers don't actively seek out the morons simply because that's more work than having the morons themselves seek out the scammer.
Maybe I should run an experimental profile to test out this nascent hypothesis.
1. I'd create moron number 1, and just sit there. (Maybe I'll just copy the OP's profile, word for word, just as a control?)
2. I'd create moron number 2, and actively contact all females 18 to 28 under 120 pounds within 5,000 miles.

Like I said above, I think the fakes are contacted BY the men first, for the most part.
It's only then that the scammer gets to reel in the scammee.
It would seem, to me, too much work for the scammer to contact all the idiot profiles because only 1 in 1,000 is a total moron like the OP, who would fall for the scam in the first place.

It doesn't work in both directions, but, pretty much, if you look at a profile, and then (after reading the profile and the journal), if you then click on the forum posts, and if you find forum posts, then almost certainly the person is real (in my experience).
It doesn't work the other way though, in that plenty of real people don't post in the forum (aka collarchat).
For that, one has to just use a modicum of common sense.

It had two sections.
The first section (the fake profile section) was dubious in that some real people were listed as fake simply because they didn't respond to someone's liking.
However, the second half was very reliable, which listed all the fake pictures, and where they came from.
I didn't bother to check but if that site is still in business, it would be useful for the fake-picture purpose (since someone else already did all your homework).
As I recall, since I had outed hundreds (upon hundreds) of fake pictures on that site, the site admin was a former Collarme moderator who was disgusted by the way things were going (personal communication).
I got bored as it was ineffective to out the fake profiles one by one on that web site. In the end, I simply maintain a list of my own, which has hundreds of the collarspace profile URLs, and I just click on them, one by one, and block/hide and move on.
This makes any search I run come up with less than a page (i.e., fewer than about 25) potential relationship mates.
Methinks the whiny victims of the scammers needs to do the same.

signs are there for a reason , to pay attention to them, especially blinking ones , are you blaming business owners also for spending lot of money on a blinking signs? Why I am here on this website in your assumption ? I am here for a reason,and I sure wanna stand out among others, sheesh. Just go to sleep let me play my violin
