"In the Fortingall Yew it seems that one small branch in the outer part of the crown has switched and now behaves as female," by sprouting 3 bright red berries which have ripened (male yew trees typically have small cones which release clouds of pollen), according to botanist Max Coleman with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. He states that environmental stress may have triggered the sex change, although the tree appears healthy.

yet another example that although xx and xy might be the most common, they certainly don't hold the gender monopoly on the planet..... So what do the berries taste like?, seems a reasonable if hidden sexual innuendo .....

Even more so if you think that it can kill you if you happen to eat the seed...

How traceable would it be if you were to hypothetically crush the seed and put it in someone's drink? [sm=angel_smiley023.gif]

Easily traceable in an autopsy.

We have a shrub/bush over here that is really deadly. If you use it to light a fire or use it in a wood fired barbecue, even the smoke will kill you..............it killed a bunch of squaddies out in the bush doing a survival course a few years back. steer clear of the Australian Oleander..............................and in an autopsy, it would look like death by misadventure

UllrsIshtar -> RE: 5000yo Scottish Yew Tree is Changing Sexes! (11/6/2015 4:37:21 PM)

Sounds like it's lonely and trying to masturbate by making a girl.

Is there any species of flora or fauna in Aus that *isn't* deadly, Dvr?

I'm trying to think how it could fall on the BBQ of my neighbours by mistake....

Berries show ancient Fortingall yew tree is 'changing sex'

The tree is said to be one of the oldest living organisms in Europe - according to local legend, Roman prefect Pontius Pilate was born in its shadow.
Not heard that legend. Nessie too.

MATELOW -> RE: 5000yo Scottish Yew Tree is Changing Sexes! (1/14/2016 8:59:30 AM)

A transgender Yew tree! Wow you have something different to stick your cock into then wont you Faggot?

CodeOfSilence -> RE: 5000yo Scottish Yew Tree is Changing Sexes! (1/14/2016 1:29:42 PM)

Amazing. There are creatures that can change sex too and creatures that impregnate themselves.

But a tree! Wow.

By the way for all of you who didn't know: Most of the trees that you see aren't single organisms but part of massive, living, collective structures: Here is one of the most massive ones known to man:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pando_(tree)

Somitimes I naively wonder if these massive entities can feel pain in some way. What torture the wood industry must then be; to have your limbs ripped from your body time and time again.

Also curious about what distinguishes male and female tree colonies in this case.

Tremble at this paraphrased quote: "Its current age is estimated to 80 000 years but some claim it to be upwards 1 million years old."
