vintagedoll -> Mixed mashed novels - Love them or hate them? (11/8/2015 7:39:19 AM)

The monster and hero or heroine is a classic plot theme, but taking a classic tale such as a Jane Austin, Edgar Allan Poe, or Lewis Carroll and twisting the universe and monster is it the rebirth of the Jabbarwoky or defaming a true classic.

As a bit of mashed up reading Dawn Metcalf brought us the Twixt novels playing on the dark dwellings of Poe. Gene Showalter went through the looking glass with zombies, and the popular trend is anything with zombies giving aid to Elizabeth Bennet being the ultimate zombie killer courting romance in the English country side.

Is it a crime against classic literature or do you love an alternate universe and a new monster for the strong leading character to overcome?

There has been a fad for mixed plots in the last few years. One, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, even made it to the movies. I think the trend originated with Steam Punk but it has gone farther than its origins.

I didn't care for Seth Graham-Smith's versions... Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, etc.

I did enjoy A.E. Moorat's "Queen Victoria, Demon Hunter" (SFBC monthly selection a while back) and may purchase his latest novel, "George III: Wolfman".

I consider this sub-genra as akin to Filking in music, when you re-write lyrics to a well known tune.

Did you ever notice that "House of the Rising Sun" and "Amazing Grace" scan the same? Singing the lyrics of one to the tune of the other will get an audience off balance. <evil grin>
