I saw in another forum where one partner was commenting on how his spouse was sometimes sleeping alot and other times not sleeping much at all
in medicine we say hyper-somnia and in-somnia and at times having unlimited energy and ideas called manic and times little or no energy or ideas called
depression
this is a medical problem called BI-POLAR sometimes these folks can adapt themselves aropund it but will do much better with treatment
to prevent the problems associated with it when not treated such as weight loss when in the manic phase and weight gain in the depression phase
if your partner matches this description get them the info on being bi-polar and some help to treat it

It may not necessarily be bipolar disorder. As a general rule, untreated sleep disorders result in sleep deprivation and excessive daytime sleepiness. Sometimes sufficient sleep deprivation can result in manic episodes. If a sleep disorder is in play, a sleep study is necessary to diagnose it and begin treatment. Only a qualified doctor can accurately diagnose what is going on.

Just in case anybody's curious, I was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea in 2008 and have successfully used a CPAP ever since.

Agreed, there are also several disorders that can have similar symptoms, thyroid is one of them, can lead to disturbed sleep patterns weight loss and gain, loss of energy, etc

yes when paired with the increased activity during summer months and decreased during the winter decreased apatite and weight loss in summer and increased apatite and weight gain in the winter and similar patterns noticed for several years all of these should be seen by a dr and treated ruling out the others till the remaining one is it

Im surprised you missed out stress, life changes, before going straight to bipolar? you really want to give a diagnosis???
Im not bi polar...I get insomnia, thru medication, stress, food, and my thyroid.
I would much prefer something a little more"insightful" and encompassing than thrusting out uninformed guessing.

Sorry clip, this is pure uneducated guesswork and scaremongering and downright dangerous.

As Lucy said, there are many things that produce the same or very similar results that are not bi-polar.
Only a qualified doctor can diagnose such conditions after exhausting all other common triggers.

sorry i did not mean to seem it was a absolute but based on a friend who was bi polar and one of the noticeable things was the sleep and energy the thyroid was good as was kidneys and heart yes there are many things that have similar symptoms it was just based on a friend who was
sorry for any confusion

And anyone who reads clip's posts and thinks he would be a valid source of medical diagnosis deserves the consequences of that decision.

you read it on a forum, then you bring it here...with nothing to back it up, just a "friend" who was bipolar.
If they know they are bi polar, there is no need to make assumptions about them and their symptoms
What utter crap

The very same thing happened yesterday on a FB group dealing with thyroid disorders, most people share which supermarket has at the moment glutenfree products on offer (gluten is fairly bad for people with auto-immune thyroid problems, the gluten triggers antibodies).
Sometimes there are questions about vitamins, side effects of the meds and such, and somebody swapped from levo to an NDT (natural desiccated thyroid hormone) which comes from pigs thyroid glands and contains some T3, she didn't follow the protocol of slowly raising the dose and didn't split it over the day, as a result she suffered from anxiety and heart palpitations, instead of taking 15mgs she took 130mgs and the medication wasn't from a pharmacy but from somebody in Thailand selling on eBay with a bit of cloak and dagger (you buy the bottle as a collectors item, kinda stuff - red flag if you ask me). Some doofus decided that she should just go and get some Prozac for the anxiety and continue with the high dose... WTF? Somebody just told you they massively ODed on a medication that causes it when wrongly dosed and braindead tells her to keep on ODing and add Prozac into the mix because it's so harmless...

I think I dented the desk with my head...

littleclip -> RE: partners sleeping (12/3/2015 7:48:39 PM)

I am only a nurse but in cases where there is dramatic changes you should see a dr to have it checked and rule out thyroid and pituitary problems my observations are only to give a example and bring a conversation on it hopefully in a positive manner

Lucylastic -> RE: partners sleeping (12/4/2015 9:53:17 AM)

bollocks

LadyConstanze -> RE: partners sleeping (12/4/2015 10:53:49 AM)

Some people don't need to go down a rabbit hole to have a mad hatter tea party...

I'm sure everybody with SAD will be delighted to be lumped in with bipolar

littleclip -> RE: partners sleeping (12/14/2015 9:15:57 PM)

no sad and other maladies are things to take to your dr to get diagnosed as yes many things can mimic others and only by eliminating all others can the root problem be treated. in the case I mentioned the person did have bipolar but it was noticed first in the sleeping pattern and then by looking back at the last few years a pattern was found and one of the new bipolar meds was prescribed by the dr. but only after testing of the endocrine function and hormones was a final decision made
the point is there are things that need to be brought up with your dr they cant help you if they don't know all the info
