So the damned latent cold I've been dragging around for weeks now just will not go away, I decided to go for the hard core cure, ginger cut down, honey, lemon, rum, down the neck, hot bath, wrapping up and forcing myself to sweat it out...

I am starting preparations, all apologies if I start swearing and rambling while in the process of drinking said version of a hot toddy, none of the regular over the counter meds seem to do anything, and I'm so angry, of course this dreaded cold has to get me when I was planning to have the damned flu shot...

I have one of the grossest colds ever for the last 8 days. On Tuesday night, I posted on Facebook that I was going to make the politically incorrect statement: We have now made cold medicine so safe that it no longer works. Bring back the alcohol and antihistimines.

It just came out of nowhere, my chest if full with fluids, hacking cough, my sinuses are filled up...

Asked friends that are in Europe to send me Sinupret, due to some stupid licensing problem not available in the UK, but it's just magic, herbal but somehow liquidizes the gunk in your sinuses and chest, a gross day with lots of sneezing it up, but thanks to the pre Xmas mail it seems to be stuck in the mailing system.... Gahhhhhhh

I got more relief from hot tea with honey and a shot of lemon vodka. :)

Since it's a Friday, I may go for the hot tequila and cinnamon. I was once given that my a little old Abuela that lived across the street from me. It worked but knocked me out for hours.

With sinuses Sinupret is like magic, I usually bring it back by the truck load but several friends had problems and I gave away my stash...

Currently bubbling about a pound of ginger in water, squeezed a lot of lemons, honey ready and then a shot of rum, I"ll possibly be gone with the fairies. I had 4 hot showers today, it's being cold, breaking out in sweat, cold again, but never a real fever. I just want the fever to break

Massive doses of vitamin c help too. Green Tea and honey with whatever alcohol you prefer is a great hot toddy for colds. Green tea has loads of vitamin c.

When I was a kid, it was a shot of rum and to bed with me... That would be considered child abuse now.. A warm shot of rum with lemon... Works wonders

ok back
Ingredients:

14 oz /400 g onions
34 oz /1 liter of water
14 oz /400 g of brown sugar
2 tablespoons turmeric
Cleaned small root ginger

Preparation:

Put a bowl on heat. Pour water along with sugar and leave them to boil. Add the cleaned onion, chopped in quarters, and the grated ginger root (about the size of your thumb). Place the turmeric and when it starts boiling, reduce the heat. Simmer until the amount is not reduced twice, strain, put in a glass jar, and when the mixture is completely cool, place it in the refrigerator. Take two tablespoons in the morning (on an empty stomach) and in the evening, two hours after a meal.

Warning: Before you begin the consumption of any medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

PS I also find that fresh pineapple is really good to take at the beginning of that "ugh cold coming on"

I'm allergic to onions. While the discomfort caused by cooked onions is far less than raw onions, it would still aggravate the situation.

I love green tea but all teas have been stripped from my diet as they soak up fluorite, which makes the thyroid treatments much much harder

Are you kidding? I never knew we had this in common.

I didnt know that my ex had an allergy to onions, until I kissed him and his lips look like he had been stung like a bee.... that was just from me eating a salad.
Cooked oniopns were not so bad, but I cut onions out of my diet when I was with him.

If you're alternating chills and sweats, that would be a sign you should see the doctor. It might by now have turned into bronchitis or a sinus infection. And those are treatable.

Thankfully, mine doesn't work that way. I about laughed myself silly one time I dropped by tk's apartment and he'd been sitting there eating a sub with the works, including onion. Poor kid was afraid to kiss me because he thought I'd end up looking like a blow fish. LOL.

Mine is only a problem if I ingest the onions. To be precise, I'm allergic to the water in the onion, which is what tends to be the reason behind raw onion bringing on a harsher reaction than small bits of cooked onion, like you'd find in Ragu spaghetti sauce. Anything more than that and the result isn't pretty.

I got this recipe from my doctor (who's Nigerian).
Works wonders for our family.

Smash a paracetamol (or your fave pain killer) in a mortar & pestle.
Add a few black peppercorns & cinnamon and reduce to a powder.
If you like the taste of cloves, add one whole clove and reduce to powder.
Add two teaspoons of natural brown sugar if you like it sweet. Mix well.
Shred a good knob of juicy ginger. Try not to lose the juice!
Put all ingredients into a thick-walled hi-ball tumbler or mug with the juice of 3-4 lemons and one lime.
Half-fill the tumbler/mug with near-boiling water, stirring well.
Introduce two tablespoons of natural honey.
Stir and mix thoroughly.
Add two good measures of your fave distilled alcohol (vodka, whiskey, rum, brandy etc).
Top up with the near-boiling water, stirring well.

Next, take two good squirts of a decent decongestant/sinus relief spray (Otrivine) up the nostrils.
Sip half the hot mixture for 10 minutes then blow the nose clear of all the crud that will form.
Finish the hot drink and wrap yourself warm in bed. Sleep if you can.
Repeat every 4 hours.
Stay warm and sleep if you can.

Obviously, don't go driving or operating machinery during the treatment.

I really swear by cayenne pepper mix with lemon and manuka honey. Caynenne pepper is traditional south american cure for viruses, and manuka honey kills bacteria. This should be drank hot too.

Cold, Cough, Flu,works wonders for me. And the wonderfully sour, spicy and sweet, taste like tom yum soup! I absolutely love it.

For extra strength, sometimes I add organic apple cider vinegar too.

I called on Friday as I think it is bronchitis and sinus but was told I should just wait and if it gets worse go to the ER (where it's super drafty and more people will sneeze and cough at me and the general waiting time if you're not heavily bleeding or drunk - they always see drunk people first - is about 5 hours).

I feel a bit better after having had one cup of the toddy mix (used a bit of ginger wine instead of rum) and really started to sweat, steamed this morning and added some peppermint oil to the hot water and it seems that the gunk is slowly coming out of my nose and lungs and my cough is less hacking.

OH suggested getting me a onesie but I think I need to be near death to wear that, told him to get me some nice flannel jammies and I just try to sweat it out, the washer and dryer are doing overtime... I think I picked something up when I took the train the other day, almost everybody was coughing and sneezing and the air con distributed the germs nicely

I get blisters in my mouth and digestive distress from raw onions. Cooked onions still cause some problems, but sometimes I'll think it is worth the issues and will have some carmelized onion or onion rings.

I end up explaining to waiters and waitresses all the time that the allergy is the liquid in the onion, so just picking it off of the burger work work.

I don't get the blisters. Just the digestive distress. Mine is enough to avoid like the plague and not eat any at all if it can possibly be avoided. I couldn't imagine sitting down and eating an order of onion rings. It's a level of bad that just really isn't worth it. I've done the ER trip even over cooked onions. (A mistake made from a chili cook off event about which pot contained onions and which didn't. Even in most cooked foods, I can detect onion but with the peppers and the spices, it was rather well masked.)

Picking off raw, I can do just fine, too, as long as they aren't chopped and it's just impossible to get them all. Otherwise, I just try to go for dishes that I know don't include them. Most folks ask how I can manage eating out but it's just a matter of knowing what's included in a dish and reading menus.

Well, at least when I get back to your state, we shouldn't have trouble picking a restaurant for dinner.
