You could make a girls or boys gift box... Fill it with dollar store offerings like picture frames and candles along with candy... lots of things for the boys as well... It's fun to have a box of fun cheap offerings and there are great selections at the dollar stores.

Another thing that's fun to donate...used bicycles. I would advertise in trading journals, look for them on freecycle dot com, find out who will donate bikes their kids grew out of or got tired of. As long as they have nothing more wrong with them than a flat tire (inner tube replacement things for bike tires are dirt cheap at Walmart).

I've been able to pick up perfect used bicycles (so okay, ONE had a flat tire) for $15. I've spent more money than that on a nice large makeup kit for a teenager (Angel Tree gift).

I used to donate basket balls, circular sleds, fishing poles that were around $10-12 (along with some hooks, bobbers, and sinkers), baseballs, mitts, bats, etc. for boys. I'd get something once per month and put it away to donate all at once for Christmas. I'd catch some especially good sales at Magic Mart. Buying stuff for girls was easy and more fun.

Christmas worthy crayons? Get the hugest box, and then buy several smaller boxes of crayons to go with it, for the same kid, ones that have glitter in them or are perfumed or are glow in the dark. Buy a ream (500 sheets) of plain white paper from some office supply shop and/or spend $6 on a GOOD quality coloring book.

Too bad it's not easier to find out what the kids want, like we do our Angel Trees here in WV. (I don't know if other states do the same thing.) The kid is helped to fill out a modest wish list (and not for something like a new car for their parents, etc.). If a kid had seen a beautiful blanket with Pokemon on it or Barbie or whatever, it would be nice if the kid could get exactly what they wanted. One time (my budget was $15-20 for each kid), on one girl's list she had half a dozen things...and instead of getting just one I went bargain shopping in every store at the mall and found the size of Barbie shoes she wanted (on a great half price sale!) and had enough left over to pick up two of the Barbie dolls she had also wanted (those were on sale too, lol).

I've had to pass kids by when someone encourages them to write down that they want a $300+ gaming system and several $70 games to go with it. When all the other angels have been plucked from the tree and the toys bought, these others remain and collect dust. It wouldn't be fair for one poor kid to get a $2 gift (crayons from the Dollar Tree and a cheap coloring book) while another poor kid gets almost half a thousand dollars worth of presents from Santa.

can I suggest a couple of things---if you hit up the local thrift stores (st vincents depauls, salvation army, and goodwill), I bet they would donate to you a fair number of things that would be appropriate for all the ages in question.

also, if you are looking to "promote", I encourage you to visit the closest large church to your neighborhood and I suspect they would love to join in with you.

to that point, some churches will go so far as to "adopt" the tribe and see to their needs not just at Christmas time, but in various ways throughout the year...

Can you ask a couple of their parents what would be appropriate?

Most sensible suggestion so far, IMO.

electronic drum kits for the boys, trumpets for the girls and earplugs for the adults..........................Apart from the earplugs, this happened at a union xmas party I took my son to when he was just a youngster. The drum set mysteriously disappeared after a few days.

On a purely logical basis, yes, absolutely, but those are parents who most likely can't afford to give the kids presents, think how they might feel being asked? Of course most of them would swallow their personal feeling for the sake of the kids, but I would assume it will still smart quite a bit....

The tribe is in a rural area in East San Diego County - a side road off of a side road. (It's 12 miles to the next town)

I wonder if the tribe has a social worker who could offer gift ideas.

And yes, bless you for doing this!

Ok. I have boys- 10 yr old and a 14 yr old.
Legos...no matter what they always are good. Stick with the older themes (Star Wars, Minecraft...) or the Creator series.
The other would be the gift cards for online games-Club Penguin, Wizard 101, ITunes....
Also, since you are talking kids in poverty...some of the things our kids take for granted but that are really "extras" in many houses--
AA batteries (because you may have the devices, but parents may not be able to shell out 7-$10 every few weeks for batteries which are quickly drained),
headphones/earbuds-constantly lost and/or broken and cannot use said device in many places without.
Books-believe it or not with the graphic comic/novels, the fantasy genre and the boys humor sets...very popular and usually have waiting lists a mile long at the library.

I agree with many that MP3 players are dead thing today. Cell phones is what everyone uses to play their music.

Not sure what your budget is but I think puzzle games would be fairly cheap yet provide hours of entertainment. Some other ideas: Rubic's cube, yoyo, Frisbee, nerf football, movie passes, puzzle toys, slinky???

Also look up ELENCO. Has lots of educational toys that are fairly cheap.

Ear buds definitely. I forgot how often my son lost/broke them.

This is a bit late for this year but maybe for next year, contact the schools in the better areas, they might start collecting shoes and stuff the kids grew out (basketball shoes and stuff), might be worth a try.

OsideGirl -> RE: I need some opinions, please (12/8/2015 10:39:57 AM)

Again, I'm not the organizer on this - so speaking directly to the parents, teachers etc is not an option. (and quite frankly, with the two events that I'm already part of the planning committee, I don't want to add another - I essentially have three jobs as it is)

Our goal is to give the children new items, to ensure that they know they're worth it. Bicycles are not an option because 1) it's a motorcycle event and 2) there's already a really big event that gives bicycles here and we don't want to take away from any donations that they would get.

The ear buds are a great idea and I found some that have rhinestones and things to make them unique. So, I think I'll put together a couple of girly gift baskets and I found an art kit that looks good.

ExiledTyrant -> RE: I need some opinions, please (12/12/2015 4:44:07 AM)
