TMI/TW: period talk, sorry


Ok- so I do intend to bring this up with a doctor- but I kinda know the "why it is happening" already (thyroid problems).

My periods have been fucking brutal the last two months. This month I can barely get out of bed. I gain seven pounds over night, get a migraine that makes any work impossible, and I get such bad cramps I literally am doubled over at times. Because of my back surgery a few years ago, I also get intense muscle cramps around my hips and L5.

Yes- I've taken over the counter stuff, I have salon pas, hot water bottles. Nothing is touching the migraine and nothing is touching the cramps.

Any suggestions...please...

Up your D3, B12 and iron intake, go gluten free and talk to your doctor if NTD (naturally designated thryoid as in Armour, Natural Thryoid) would be an option as a lot of people can't properly metabolize the levo and make reverse T3 (RT3) which does exactly the opposite of T3

Since they put me on NTD and I went GF my periods went from fainting dead from the pain to "Yeah, I got cramps, might take an Advil", still not great fun but at least not the curling up in a corner and wanting to die kinda thing anymore.

I recall you said you have Hashimoto's too, the problem is that the gluten causes the antibodies to be more active and gives your immune system an even bigger kicking

I am currently baking bread for Christmas dinner- gluten free is nearly impossible to jump into right now. That makes me want to die more than the headache I think...

We're having fucking spaghetti for dinner tonight.

Oh I am on armour thank god.

I don't think I'm on enough...but with depression/anixiety...they want to keep it lower...

I think I might just have them yank out the pesky little thing...

How about the D3, B12 and stuff? For me that also made a lot of difference, and my endo explained without taking huge amounts of D3 and B12, plus selenium, I can have all the T3 in my body, it's just not reaching the cells. Also a hypo thyroid acts like a sponge for D3 and B12, in case you don't have enough of it, it will also start absorbing the sex hormones, which leads to super painful periods and in the worst case ovarian tumors.

Yah- I have a daily b12 supplement (and a GREAT adrenal supplement- its called adrenal complex and its by Standard Process- I don't know if you can get them across the pond but it has helped so much).

I will go pick up some D3.

I also do need new iron- I have a huge economy sized bottle of iron- but I think its passed its expiration date and probably not doing what it should- and I didn't take it all week as I've been distracted. My mom has some though- and I think I'll probably grab some at her house- and eat mainly meatballs for dinner. Anemia runs in my family...so low iron is probably just plaguing me.

Currently eating a spinach salad with some bacon and cheese- hoping it helps abate the headache until I can take some excedrin PM and just fall asleep.

They sorted out my adrenals before putting me on NDT, going off coffee and all sodas and caffeine was rough, then put me on DHEA...

Low iron can really do you in, thyroid is often genetic, so I wouldn't be surprised that low iron runs in the family, selenium helps the thyroid a lot to metabolize and tumeric, completely forgot to mention it but it's so good for a ton of things, especially your metabolism, in fact my endo told me that to speed up mine, I should take milk thistle, tumeric and selenium and it seriously worked. Trader Joe's is your friend, tumeric on it's own tastes a bit lbahhh but it is just as good and a fraction of what they charge for pills

Just here backing up Lady C's suggestion about the vitamin D. (By the way, the first link is awesome, for anyone who didn't read it.) Most women don't realize that they aren't getting enough vitamin D in the winter months because they don't have the same exposure to sunlight. Unless you're eating an insane amount of fish, it's really easy to become vitamin D3 deficient. Since D3 is really more of a hormone in women, it's an easy way to throw your system out of whack.

PS- I got on a real regiment with the suggested stuff above (Milk Thistle, Turmeric, Vit D. and Vit b12).
This month was WAYYYYY BETTER. like a thousand times better.

I second this amazing post! I eat a gluten free diet and take iron supplements as needed. Ever since these diet and lifestyle (because eating this way is not always easy) changes, I've never had issues with my period. I don't even need to take advil.

The only other thing I do is drink a really great tea: http://www.amazon.com/Yogi-Teas-Womans-Bags-Energy/dp/B0009F3SEQ - I have this throughout the month but especially on those days I'm on my period.

I hope this helps :) I think even if you just take some iron supplements, that can help a lot. In my experience, that's usually a big part of nightmare periods.
