NorthernGent -> The Original Nightstalker (12/27/2015 3:08:54 PM)

I'm a fan of true crime, The Zodiac holds a peculiarly special place in my heart - not withstanding butchering innocent people minding their own business.

Anyway, this Original Nightstalker, never heard of him until recently so watched a couple of documentaries. Turns out he has a bit of a reputation in the United States.

Were there any plausible suspects for this fellow because from what I can gather he was pretty well organised and didn't leave many clues.

Below is a police sketch of the original Nightstalker... he looks vaguely familiar to me. Rumor has it that he fled to the UK.

Wasn't that the rumour with The Zodiac?

Apparently, some of the phrases he used were deemed to be British by American commentators. These phrases weren't British by the way.

He simply had an odd way of turning a phrase.

MisterP61 -> RE: The Original Nightstalker (12/28/2015 1:56:32 PM)

To answer your query, the police never came out and named a suspect (which is common practice in the states), but they did say they had "people of interest" (nice turn of a phrase isn't it?) they were looking into. The person they ended up saying was the nightstalker was Richard Ramirez. He died of B-cell lymphoma while on death row in California. Pretty sure they got the right guy since the attacks stopped once he got caught.

Ah right, I was under the impression that there was that Ramirez bloke who did kill people, but then there was the original Nightstalker. Two different serial killers.

Where was this sketch taken from Butch?

I've started watching a few documentaries about this, watched another one last night - and no mention of a witness sighting.

Although he did have to escape on his bike at one point.

How this bloke isn't better known is baffling.

Turns out he has been linked to a reign of terror consisting of about 10 murders and 50 incidences of rape.

Pretty extreme by anyone's standards.

Missokyst -> RE: The Original Nightstalker (12/29/2015 5:50:14 PM)

I am a crime junkie too. I have been researching various criminal activities in the USA since I was pre-teen. And that wasn't easy at the time, it meant a lot of hours at the public library and many many newspapers.
The original night stalker was never caught. Wiki has a lot of good info on the crimes as well as data on the primary detectives.
I always wondered why they didn't give Richard Ramirez a different "title" given the amount of publicity from the first night stalker

I do believe this was a bit too subtle for some.

Lucylastic -> RE: The Original Nightstalker (12/30/2015 10:07:39 AM)

went over my head.....
Reg the Zodiac, I still have the paperback about it, from the early 80s..read it more than a few times. I enjoy true crime, to the enth degree

As an aside, Im watching a ten hour documentary, as a true crime fan, and Im not sure if you can get it NG where you are, but its on netflix and its called " Making a Murderer".
Im only half way thru it but its got a few WTF moments in it. I dont know the end yet, I know I could easily look it up, but im intrigued to the point, knowing will ruin it.
Has anyone else seen it?

He's probably some American bloke who no one in England knows. Either that or a sub-standard sketch of someone known across the world.

Wayward Soul is stalking me a bit at the moment, so just something I have to accept - short of getting a restraining order out on her. As long as I don't look out of my window one night and she's sat in a tree looking in, then it's all harmless.

Yeah, I've seen that programme advertised, Lucy, but I don't watch a great deal of television these days as prefer to read.

The Zodiac is a pretty interesting case, although I'm not sure the codes were the mark of a genius mind. One of the codes was cracked by a teacher within an hour, and I have a hunch the rest were a load of rubbish and there was no actual code in them at all.

Having watched a few documentaries now about the Original Nightstalker I'm surprised he isn't more well known. A really vicious bloke who did a lot of damage, more than 99.9% of serial rapists and murderers, and considering the amount of crimes he committed he was very well organised as he left barely a clue.

Seems he started by ransacking people's homes, more than 100 by all accounts, and got off on simply invading people's privacy. Wasn't averse to shooting policemen either.

Thanks for the info, Miss.

Is the Original Nightstalker well known in the United States, in the sense of being up there with The Zodiac?

The Zodiac is well known here, possibly second only to Jack the Ripper in terms of interest, but the Original Nightstalker is largely unknown.

Considering the destruction he laid in his wake, I would say he should be more notorious than The Zodiac.

Is there any suggestion that Ramirez could have been the Original Nightstalker too? Or is it not plausible due to age, location etc?

Ego, anyone?

My response on here was to kdsub, not you. I have not addressed you or mentioned you on this thread. You are the one on here talking about me. So you might want to rethink about who is preoccupied with who.

The fact that we went back on forth on one other thread in this forum may have something to do with that fact that this is, oh I don't know, a discussion board? Where people expect to talk to other people? Ponder that for a moment.

Pondered.

Conclusion: stalker.

Missokyst -> RE: The Original Nightstalker (12/31/2015 7:48:28 PM)

Here in California there was considerable news coverage of the original stalker. In fact he is the primary reason I started researching crime in the USA. Well him, and Juan Corona, try looking up that one some time.
When the activity stopped he sort of dropped out of focus from news media. And then when RR started his crime spree for us anyway, it was local LA news and that pretty much got coverage all over.
The Zodiac was huge all over. But at the time there seemed to be a plethora of killers all over.

Yeah, for whatever reason the 1970s-1990s seems to have been a golden period for serial killers. We had loads in England coming out of the woodwork during that time, but these days they're pretty quiet.

Could Ramirez have been the Original Nightstalker? Or too young?

Missokyst -> RE: The Original Nightstalker (1/1/2016 10:22:42 PM)

I believe he was too young. If I am not mistaken he would have been around 12 yrs old. And while there were certainly a few young killers, most of those kept their crimes close to home.
