Believe it or not, I actually got to 13 before I heard my first rock song. Up to that point, all I heard was my mother's classical and my father's show tunes. I never really heard what my friends listened to because we were always out riding our bikes or at the playground or outside doing something, which should tell you roughly how old I am. (No peeking at my profile!) The first rock song I heard was David Bowie's Let's Dance and I've been hooked on rock music ever since. Best addiction ever. Thanks David.

Bowie is gone and the world is a darker place.

Celebrity deaths never bother me. Like never.
But this, this one hit hard.
Maybe because it came out of nowhere, maybe because Bowie was God to Mouse, but mostly because there was no one like David.
Acoustic strummer, Cabaret Queen, Glam King, Plastic Soul, Punk Rocker, aging rocker on the run, techno innovator, Krautrock King,
Roots with the Velvets and Iggy, Warhol and Reed
So many incarnations, Garbo, Ziggy, Goblin King, Thin White Duke, Internet pioneer, Recluse
Artist, playwright, rock star, actor, producer, mime.
His greatest role was his life.

Who else could judge the fashion duel in Zoolander unquestioned?

One of very very few that didn't compromise, that followed his vision no matter what, that lived on his terms and in doing so, changed the world as we know it.
Music, fashion, film, they all have been altered by his passing. And so have we, whether you've heard his name or not.

And how Bowie can you get?
Knows he's going to die. Cuts one great comeback album out of nowhere. Then drops Blackstar (Which is savagely good. Seriously. Run, do not walk to youtube to listen) on us on his 69th birthday and two days later he's gone.
The ultimate mike drop.

Tips my hat. Bows.

"Look up here, I'm in heaven,
I've got scars, that can't be seen"

"And the stars look very different today"

He was... something else. There was always a bit of the otherworldly about him.

LadyConstanze -> RE: David Bowie RIP (1/12/2016 2:58:06 AM)

I love his music, I even like the old Tin Machine stuff (well, some of it), but he seemed a bit odd, when he had one of his comebacks and played a few festivals in Europe, he had some strange requirements, the ground was dry but he insisted on sort of a catwalk to the stage, covered with a carpet, the planks had to be replaced for him as other people had walked on them before, and the carpet had to be new. Then people had to stand at least 10 meters away (and this was backstage, quite unlikely that any of the other bands or journos present would have thrown themselves at his feet and declared undying love, but backstage it tends to be crowded and it felt a bit like cattle being penned in, mind you I didn't mind, I was squeezed up against a very good looking guy I had flirted with before, so thanks Mr. Bowie), all good but but then people backstage had to turn around and not look at him, he disappeared in his bus twice and roadies were running around like nuts reminding everybody to not look at him.

Since it was a festival, it was tight time slots and he threw everything off for 30 minutes, before that he demanded more time for his set up (out of the blue), so all the previous bands lost stage time. He must have had a really moody day, but he then invited the Prodigy on stage with him as they had the last spot after him and he liked them...

No idea if he just wanted to be awkward because he could or what happened, some artists psych themselves up before a performance. It was kind of funny to see the reaction of the musicians, they all lost stage time and usually everybody would be pissed off, but they just went "Well, it IS David Bowie, you expect him to do something strange..."

Has GOD died? Why the worldwide moaning on a par with Princess Diana occurring? He was a talented musician amongst so many other talented musicians. Is his soul any more important? Not even Elvis Presley got so much moaning adoration and accolades. He came from humble working class origins in a Ghetto of a mostly black populated district of a London Borough called Lambeth.

Obviously, you did not read all the replies or you would have seen that your superfluous question was previously answered.
Consider post # 22 and know that to some people, he was God or a God.

Let's see.
Bowie is considered by many to be the greatest and most important rocker of all time. Which would make him one of the most important cultural figures of the last 65 or so years

He started with folk, slid to the Velvets, hung out with and influenced Warhol. Helped bring Iggy Pop to the world. Produced Lou Reed. Went from instrumental singer songwriter to helping bring punk to the world. Blew the Seventies away with Ziggy. Made it acceptable for men to dye their hair. Was openly gay and cross-dressing when it wasn't even considered kinda cool. Inspired generations of gay men to accept themselves.
Went black in the mid seventies. Introduced Luther Vandross and helped popularized the Philadelphia sound, brought disco to the masses.
Hopped into Germany as kraftwerk was starting to do their thing and in doing helped lead into the industrial and heavy syth sounds that dominated the eighties
(Seriously, listen to Simple Minds. Its fucking Bowie w/o his twisted magic touch). Worked with Fripp and Eno leading into electronica, techno, dance, house.
His Berlin trilogy is quite possibly the best three record run ever.

Was one of the first people to start doing music videos. (I remember seeing Bowie vids in the mid 70's.) As such, helped pioneer the genre. A genre which has had a large influence on the way movies are made, from tying in soundtracks (See any 80's rom-com where they have the musical interlude) to quick edits, jagged cuts, and hand cams. Not to mention the directors which graduated from video to film, Spike Jonz and Fincher just to name two...

Jumped on board the net uber early. saw the massive potential. Was the first person to release an album online. One of the first to have a website. AFAIK, the first and one of few to interact with fans on his forum.

Changed finance too. Created Bowie Bonds based on the future earnings of his music catalog (Smart Bowie, he saw that the net would change everything and got as much money as he could up front before the whole record biz shithouse collapsed), the first star to do so.
Fuck, now athletes are doing the same thing

If you watch movies. Bowie changed what you watch. If you listen to music, unless its strictly classical or jazz, he altered and influenced that.

And I haven't even gotten going on fashion where designers thought he was a God.

Bowie was like a real life Forrest Gump. Wherever the change was, the next big thing, there he was, always two steps ahead of the curve.
But he was a Gump that spoke for the alienated, the alone, the ones questioning themselves and their place. He made it alright for so many people to be fucked up, to be broken, to learn to accept themselves a bit.

Poet, mime, singer, actor, and always, always artiste.

Look at the tributes. Look at how wide a range he received. They run the entire gamut, from all over the world. Rappers, Madonna, Punk Rockers, Classic Rockers, artists, fashion icons, astronauts, Front page New York Times, Washington Post, lead on BBC. Prime ministers paid him tribute. The fucking Vatican played Space Oddity for him.

How many 'rock stars' does that happen for?

I don't buy into the cult of celebrity and put no one on a pedestal and most certainly don't worship rock stars,* but Bowie was different. He broke the mold. His reach was too large and his influence too far spread to delegate to merely a rocker

As for Diana, what did she do to compare except marry and divorce a prince and look like a wren?

I'll take Bowie over her anyday, TYVM

*I used to work concerts. I've seen and met and witnessed up close some real big stars and I ain't impressed. They just peeps like you and Me, trying to figure their way through life without an instruction manual.

He actually came from Brixton but his parents moved to Lambeth when he was very young. And no, god hasn't died. How could he ? He never bloody lived or existed except in the fertile imagination of primitive spin doctors

And Mott the Hooples Dale Griffin just passed as well (same age as Glenn). Altho weren't they more of an english thing?
Griffin also collaborate with Bowie.

Music affected me more during my formative years than "god" did.
Diana ... she did a great deal of humanitarian work. Altho being English, I have my opinions on the royals, I wasnt fond of her or Charles.
The Eagles, like Bowie got me thru a lot of emotional shit as music often does.
Made me feel awesome, magical, heavy, angry, soft, fly, cry, scream, bawl, happy, ecstatic, dance, and so much more.
Music crosses every boundary of ethnicity, tongue, sex and religion.

I just can't even....
I'm still not ready to accept it.

For Christ's sake, my username is one of his songs and I've used this name absolutely everywhere since the song first came out.

I'm not ready
