We have installed an electric hoist, the type commonly used in clubs and professional dungeons, really intended for lifting car engines, in our club. One of the things we have had to consider is what happens is their is a power failure. The sub is hung by her ankles, the power fails, the lights go off and the hoist DOWN control doesn't work anymore. How do you get your sub back to safety? Inevitably, if you are doing the upside-down-by-her-ankles thing, the ankles will be strapped to each end of a cross bar, itself hanging from a shackle in the centre. You can barely reach each ankle strap, and if you undo one, that leg will fall, that end of the cross bar will swing upwards, the other down, with her other ankle, and she'll break her head or her neck, or both, as she hits the deck. I'd like an electrical solution, such as an uninteruptible power supply (UPS) which will give a battery back-up for ten minutes while you sort things out. As yet, I haven't found one that will take a motor load. For the time being, we have a safety plan in place which involves bringing other furniture already nearby underneath the hanging girl, so that she can take some of the weight and have something to hang onto whime being let down. Roping the bar end to stop it swinging up out of control is also in the emergency plan. If you use or install such hoists have you thought about what to do when it goes wrong? Have you any bright ideas?
