Assume from the information given that Mary and John know one another. As Jasper 'smelled' Mary before he saw her and that's what drove him.. assume he did not know her and I'd say you got the exact scenario the author had in mind.

It was meant to be trubling and the reader doesn't actually know whether she ended up consenting or not. She may have called the cops for all we know.

I'm betting that Mary would go for dragons.. that's what I would do and Jasper sounds like way loads more fun that John. ;)
