“I am not going to live long.” Her voice shook. “Everyday it eats away a little more of me. First it was my toes. Then my ankles. Then my calves and then knees. Even now I feel it slowly creeping up my thighs. Eventually it will hit my spine. You could have anyone. Anyone. Why do you want a head on two wheels?”
“If you are trying to discourage me you are doing a terribly poor job.” His voice was unfazed, determined, even a little cold to the casual outsider. “At this point everything you say will only make me want to marry you right now. I want you, and I am not going spend even another moment of my life not taking care of you. So unless you say a definitive no, I’m going to stay on my knees.”
A long silence and streams of tears later she said yes.
