crumpets -> Do you make your own leather gear (WHERE inline do you get supplies)? (3/11/2016 6:51:08 AM)

Where do you get your online raw (black) leather strips?

I've made leather and metal/wood/plastic gags, cuffs, blindfolds, etc., but I'm interested in expanding my toy chest while making my own leather-based stuff (e.g., whips, paddles, restraint equipment, etc.).

Normally, I, like everyone else, go to Dom Depot or one of the other local hardware stores (ACE, Orchard Supply, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.), in addition to the local arts and crafts stores ... but ... here's the problem.

  • The leather at the art-and-craft stores is usually too thin!
  • It's also horrendously expensive (for just a piece of raw leather)
  • And I don't want or need any color other than black (so most of their stock is useless)

Given that most fetish-related leather (for toys anyway) is thick (think belt-like thick) and black and often in strips of from one inch wide to about 1/2 inch wide, I'd like to ask you....

Where online do you get your raw leather black strips & straps?

I already have most of the tools, so I'm just asking about the leather strips and straps:

I don't buy straps, I buy hides (whole or half depending on the project) and cut my own straps. It's much cheaper if you're making multiple items and the leather is usually in significantly better condition than the dried out straps you see at your local Tandy. Additionally, buying pre-dyed leather can be hit-or-miss. You have no idea what kind of dye was used and how it will hold up over time.

As for shopping online, except for some specific instances I would say "don't". You have leather suppliers near you that allow you to walk in and see and feel the leather you're buying and I would suggest you do this. Even Tandy has some nice hides for sale occasionally and would be worth a visit if you're in a pinch.

I bought hides and other supplies at Tandy Leather in Grand Rapids. If I remember correctly, Tandy Leather has a website as well.

I don't buy straps either (I've done some purses) - but this company actually has a section for perverts:

Sorry I haven't responded sooner, as I haven't been logged in for so long that I don't even remember how long it has been.

Checking out that site, I see that they do have a lovely selection in the "fetish" category:
    Fetish
  • Bison
  • Bullhide
  • Cowsides
  • Deer Elk & Goat
  • Embossed Cow
  • Full Cowhides
  • Hair On Hides
  • Metallics
  • Sheepskin

For example, Bullhide 6-8oz 20-28 sqft is $185.00 per hide, with Deerskin 8-12 sqft 2.5-3oz at $75.00 per hide and Dove Cowhide 50-60 sqft 3-3.5oz at $330.00 per hide. So there is quite a range to choose from, and, like anything, there are quite a few technical details to overcome in order to make a good buying decision.

I suspect a nice assortment of custom toys and gear can be made with just one hide.

    Thanks for the wonderful pointers!

I use the craigslist for sale: materials section for scraps and other cheap leather.

New York City has several leather places.

More importantly is a Kaufman Shoe supplies. They sell glue (Petronius #8 rubber cement) and other products that are designed to be attached to leather. If you want to make things out of leather, it is a great resource.

They also sell sheets of thick, hard leather designed for soles. Think of it as the kind of thing you make leather armor out of rather than a fabric. Perfect if you want to add some stiffness to your leather creation.
