Americans don't just have more guns that anyone else – 270 million privately held firearms. They also have the highest gun ownership per capita rate in the world, with an average of about nine guns for every 10 Americans. - Washington Post ~~~~~~~~~ Since my move to Florida, I had less guns & ammo than ever before in my life, just 2 or 3. Lately, the slave has shown interest so now we have 6 total, 4 defense, 2 sport. We have a home defense pump shotgun and 3 defense pistols (1 each for carry and 1 for the vehicle). Plus I have a beautiful over/under double barrel sport shotgun and the slave has a scoped 44 sport pistol. I grew up in a family that had guns. In my wealthier days living in Detroit, I had a gun collection that was rather large. I am going to start collecting again. So I wondered how many fellow forum members were enthusiasts of the sport or just had a gun or two for protection?

I grew up in a family where guns were always around. I grew up in the country. We had guns for hunting which is a religion where I grew up and for protection. I learned to shoot when I was just a little kid but admit I haven't used a gun since I left home at 16. Currently we own one ever since the riots last year but I have a feeling we'll be acquiring at least one more in the future.

If there is "an average of about nine guns for every 10 Americans", then on average there is one American who does not have a gun - but no option to select it.

Growing up I spent time in a rural setting and there were always guns around, but I own none, never felt the need for one.

We used to have a nice collection. My dad was quite the sportsman. Winchesters, Remingtons, Ithaca, Colt, and an old Luger he had for protection in Vietnam. He had an elephant shooting rifle with a special scope, just in case he ever went on an African safari. I can't remember how old I was (8?) when my dad first started taking my brother and me to the officers' shooting range around once every 1-2 months. His last (guided) hunting expedition was in Wyoming where he downed an antelope in his mid-70's. My mom fussed for several years afterwards about all the gamey antelope meat taking up room in the freezer until she gave most of it away. At present, down from 3 rifles to 1 rifle in my home. My parents didn't own guns. None of their friends owned guns. First husband had a single shot 22 we used for target shooting, but that's all. Then I get together with a guy from Montana. My eyes were quickly opened to the gun owning community. It seems that everyone hunts. Many carry a weapon all the time. After saying I would never shoot to kill anything, I shot a critter that was after my chickens and didn't even cry as I might have done years ago.

Guns are not for me. I have no quarrel with anyone who wants them, they just aren't for me. My husband has an interest in taking up shooting again, and that is fine with me also. Simply keep the gun out of my sight. They scare the be-jeepers out of me.

Two paint ball guns that I need to nag my son to get rid of and possibly one or two bb guns that have never been fired in the 30 years I've lived here. I have been advised to get a rifle with rubber bullets to deter bears but I found having a dog was easier than learning to shoot.

There are about 10 rifles and 2 handguns. Mom keeps them in her bedroom. Only she knows where the keys are to the cabinets. I sold mine years ago when I started having mental problems. Yes, I know how to shoot but I don't like it.

My dad was a collector, so I have quite a few. I also have several rifles and shotguns that have been handed down from my mom's side of the family. Some that have been handed down for generations.

To simply ask how many guns you own is a misleading question in the perceptions of the anti-gun groups. It might be more pertinent to break down the scope of gun ownership into categories such as: 1. Handguns 2. Rifles 3. Shotguns 4. Assault weapons 5. Collector ( functioning) 6. Collector (non-functioning) I am not a gun advocate but I also believe in fairness and the constitutional right to bear arms (within reason)

I've always wanted a nonfunctional antique muzzle loader. Simply because they look cool over a fireplace. But those things get pricey.
