Factors to consider include width of board, rounded edges, or sharp corners, and height off ground. The narrower the board the more painful, a board that came to a point is sometimes mentioned in historical documents if I remember right, but that's going to cause real permanent injury. Rounded off corners (like a bullnose countertop) is probably more useful than a squared off board. The height off the ground makes a difference too. If the rider is standing, the board should be placed at a height that puts much of their weight on the delicate bits if they are lowering themselves. Getting the height just right is a bigger challenge than most people realize. This is a device that can cause real damage. If you're writing fiction, duration and severity are going to be things you need to consider to make it credible. Your heroine isn't riding for twelve hours on a sharp triangle shaped wooden pony, and then running off to have sex with the hero.
