Is this the fucking coolest thing ever????

http://today.uchc.edu/features/2011/jun11/bird.html#.VxQJE8v9YBQ.email

(I got one!)

Maybe two.

On Saturday....having my coffee in my car....reading my paper...I saw this little birdie just sitting there....thinking...."maybe he's fucked up....just sitting there...."...watched him for about 10 minutes...thinking..."he ain't moving....maybe...." so I got out of my car....verrrrrrrry carefully....the little guy was mayyybe about the size of a smalllll.....baked potato.....just sitting....I'm about 50 feet away....moving slow.....he gets up....not pleased at all....

Fucker starts making it clear...."you are NOT wanted here!!!!"....I'm thinking maybe he's hurt....but...he starts dancing...it's a portion of an 11 acre commercial property I own...owned a few in the area over the last 40 years...NEVER seen anything like this guy.....he starts skittering across the property like one of those sand birds....like his legs just won't stop running....I get closer....he starts exposing his back feathers like a little fist sized ostrich...making it clear...."YOU ARE NOT WELCOME!!!!!"...guy could not have been bigger than a 4 ounce steak....little beady head....pointy beak....and he flies away....so I get a little closer and....low and behold....4 speckled eggs....right where he was sitting. In a nest that couldn't have been more than 30 or 40 strands of hair and twigs.....on the ground....in the damned rocks....and now I'm thinking..."sheeeeeatttt!!!! What if some big birds overhead see this action???"

Of course....we're in Seattle....it rains a smidge here so....I'm thinking "okay....how do I build this guy a house that's protected from the rain....UREKA" (I own a paving company)....genius element comes in to play....and....I go down and get one of those barrels from my yard (I have like 800 of 'em) you see in the freeway....4 feet tall....2 feet around.....sawzall....we go'n build us a motherfucking bird house like none ever before!!!

So....I go down....cut me a door (twice his size), place the whole thing over the center of the babies....tons of room for Momma to go...."well this is the fucking SHIT!!!"

Apparently....that aint the way birds think

Momma walked around this thing for 2 hours (I had HUUUUGE bids to do...but I stayed there the whole damned time....watching....Momma....never going in.

So...

I moved the barrel such that the babies were outside the barrel...placing the barrel so wind and rain would affect her minimally...filled the whole insides with bird feed stuff....(I don't know about this bird....anyone know? Do they like worms? I can get worms.

Momma still hasn't gone in to get any bird feed...and will ONLY sit on her eggs if the eggs are OUTSIDE of the barrel.

All day Saturday....only bird I saw was Momma.

Today...I saw Dad.

Mom left a few times on Saturday to go get some stuff (but....always sitting on the eggs until she absolutely HAD to have a beer...and then she came back shortly)....today, Dad showed up....sat right the fuck down on the eggs and....Mom went out for a beer.

Pretty fucking cool shit.

Now....all protected...with signs.

Pretty fucking cool shit.

Anyone wanna give me some advice on this dude?

Put barrels or cones up in a ten or twenty foot circle around the nest. you just want to make sure they aren't disturbed.

WHat Des said, ground nesters can be very very protective and or abandon if disturbed.
When we had our boat in the yard, we had terns nesting under the trailer when we went down to get it ready for the season.
We didnt move the boat all summer because of the nesters. We put stop caution tape around the boat. so people would steer clear.
THey have learned not to nest on the pathways and road, because, well silly humans !!!!
I enjoy the hell out of watching the critters far more interesting than the kardashians

We were watching some adolescent bald eagles today. It's a lot easier to see them and stay out of their way.
