So all people are equal but some are "more equal" than others?

EDIT: I guess I took too long to post and Bama already mentioned it.

I also replied to Bama "The feelings of one transgender person could be so severe that they might trump the *slight* feelings of lots of other people."

So again, one person's feelings outweigh those of "lots of other people"? Wouldn't that set a dangerous precedent?

It depends on the "one". If it is "one" favored by the left, of course it doesn't. If it is "one" favored by the right, of course it does.

For me, a key factor would be which "one" actually poses a credible threat to safety.

As for the left/right axis, I do hope you'll forgive this old leftish dude for allowing the 41 letters requesting leniency for confessed child molester Denny Hastert to make me a tad skeptical of the right's sincerity in claiming "We're just saving the children!"

Exactly! The threat is so overblown with non factual hysteria its beyond a joke, but then so much today is verging on the pathetic.

I'm actually shocked by this child abuse thing but ya really can't paint the right with a broad brush because of the actions of one man anymore than you can paint the left because of skeletons you might find in the closet of one of its members.

Of course not.

My concern is that it's a bit hard to trust the sincerity of a party that's simultaneously (a) invoking the safety of children to legislate against a nondocumented "threat" of transgendered people using public restrooms and (b) seeking leniency in the case of an actual child molester who, if I understand correctly, will be perfectly free to use any men's room in the land once he's served his sentence.

Was that really not clear?

Yes, crystal when you put it that way and even amusing, ya made me chuckle. Still though, I'm not aware that those in power legislating on behalf of child safety are the ones who were seeking leniency. Not only that but a now outed gay male child molester using the men's room is no different than one who hasn't been outed as is no different than a gay female child molester using the ladies room. Quite an irony here.

That would be a good point if you had established that either party was indeed seeking leniency, which you have not. Some individuals of unspecified political affiliation wrote letters of support, which does NOT make it party policy.

How can you say that we have to let trans into womens locker rooms without opening them to all males, isn't that discimination against all non trans?

Congratulations. Your assertion above has set a new standard (or if you prefer and possibly more accurately) a new depth of ignorance, cretinism and prejudice for these boards.

Is it possible for anyone to say anything stupider and retain the ability to function, even at the minimal level displayed by the poster of the above?

Wow, that's fact filled and oh so polite.

Yes to the first, no to the second. Re the first, I'm trying to get across that it's not numbers of people on one side versus numbers of people on the second that matters so much as 'quantity and severity of feeling' on one side, versus the other.

Re the second point - 'a dangerous precedent' - no, not hardly. I think we all make that sort of calculation, all the time (and most likely have done for time immemorial).

There are so many examples that I don't really know where to start. Say, at one of the extremes: Imagine I'm part of a vast extended family of 50 people, every member of which is waiting for my extremely rich Great Auntie Doris to die, so that we can all inherit from her. None of us like her much - none of us will care when she does die. At 95, it's *slightly* irritating to all of us that she's still going. She, on the other hand, has a *very strong* feeling that she'd like to remain alive. I think we'd all agree that her feeling trumps the total of all our - her family's - feelings.

There are lots of less extreme examples in everyday life, though. Some issues involve an irritation, an annoyance or a pain in the arse on one side; on the other, they go to much more basic feelings - outright fear or despair, for instance. Re despair: say 90% of a village is pretty much atheist and they get annoyed at seeing churches. 10% is strongly Christian - so much so, they feel their lives depend on it. All of us 90% atheists will let them get on with building their church and worshipping in it. (I'd hope).

I think that the feelings of someone who looks, dresses and acts like a male, and thinks himself to be a male, might well go to those 'much more basic feelings' like fear and despair. I'm inclined to think, though, that the feelings of those who see, say, a woman with big hands and an adam's apple in a women's toilet, are going to be way less strong.

Not even close. The Basic rights of almost all are givens. Mild distaste or disapproval on the totally undocumented possibility of misbehavior never justifies treating anyone as a pariah or subhuman. I'm very sure the feelings, 'morality' and basic religious convictions of segregationists were far more offended by black Americans living in their neighborhoods than any feel about trans people. Guess where all that went? Even the Oreo on the SCOTUS couldn't stomach that.

The obvious answer for all is to free up a lot of commercial and public building square footage for more useful purposes by making only unisex restrooms legal. I'd suggest deadbolt locks in the inside of all stall doors, but the body count of inaccessible people having medical emergencies would have those removed in weeks.

Yes, of course: force business owners, by way of more government regulations, to foot the bill for creating new restrooms! That's sure to not create any resentment whatsoever, and who doesn't love more regulations?

the totalitarian left?

You must mean the toiletarian left

nope, no proof of either claim. 1000s of women have not flipped out about this in the entire US.

It would be interesting to see similar experiments but with a real transgender rather than some berk in a dress and wig.
