crumpets -> Are your sexual preferences and user name public information? (5/14/2016 5:44:49 PM)

When you sign up for a "dating" web site, you are making your information available for other users to see.
But does that mean your information is “public”?

Emil Kirkegaard, Oliver Nordbjerg, and Julius Daugbjerg Bjerrekær – who are affiliated with Aarhus University in Denmark - without anyone's permission - used a "scraper" to collect personal data from nearly 70,000 users from an online dating site.
  • They never asked permission of the site
  • They never notified the nearly 70,000 users

The data, collected from November 2014 to March 2015, includes user names, ages, gender, religion, and personality traits, as well as answers to the personal questions the site asks to help match potential mates for nearly 70,000 users.

Kirkegaard, without permission from the university, or from the site, or from the users - uploaded the results to an online forum even though Kirkegaard was NOT working on behalf of the university when doing so.

    More information:
  • Researchers just released profile data on 70,000 users without permission
  • Privacy online: New questions raised about 'public' data
  • Scientists release personal data for 70,000 profiles
  • The forum where the data was uploaded to

The question now is how do you, as a user, prevent that from happening or, if it happens, how do you ameliorate the privacy damage?

Pretty much anything you put on the net is public information. If you don't want it seen or read, don't post it.

What that guy meant was that it is online and it is public even if you sign an agreement to make it privatre.

no laws are broken becuase it was online.

There was a lot of screaming and protests on the other site about it, and a bunch of people set their age to 95 to frustrate the dozens of anticipated horndogs that would have the ability to search by age, gender, and location.

    Nothing of substance happened.

    This. Absolutely and utterly this.

    Thanks, DS!

I'd wondered why there were so many nonagenarians, most of them in Antarctica.

    ~FR~

I see crumpets is up to his usual tricks of scare-mongering again.

You really have to be extremely naive (or a complete and utter numpty) not to know that whatever you put out there is available for anyone and everyone to gain access to and use in whatever way they feel like whether you gave explicit permission or not.

Spitfire and mouse just about summed it up nicely.

On fl there seem to be far more antarticans at 99 years of age than here for some reason.

    From FL's own help page:

    quote:

I don't want everyone to know where I live, what do I do? (direct link)

What we recommend you do is choose a location far enough from you that you are comfortable with yet in your general area. If you really want to be off the radar you can always just specify your country as "Antarctica"... There are more kinksters than you would think living in Antarctica. And apparently the penguin population is getting very nervous... For the leather, you pervs, the leather!!!

For a lot of people, it works. Of course, it all goes to crap the first time you RSVP to a local (to you) event.

Do you find FL useful for local events?

AdoraMonster -> RE: Are your sexual preferences and user name public information? (5/17/2016 1:03:00 PM)

Which is why I always put the unique up in these sites v mostly fakes and scoundrels of a bed of lies.

ForgetToRemember -> RE: Are your sexual preferences and user name public information? (7/13/2016 7:12:00 PM)

I'm not sure I see the issue here. This information that they can collect is stuff that you willingly give away. You should expect anyone to be able to access it - the internet is ubiquitous, and it doesn't take much to sign on to a free website (or even a paid one - if someone has the motive). This information is not used for identification (unless you use your real name as your username for example). Pictures of you should not show your face if you care about your privacy. So, what you are concerned about is that people can do sociological research...yea, they have always been able to do it - now it's automated.

Some people retire to Florida. Others, to Antarctica.

More nightlife (longer nights) in Antarctica and almost everybody dresses for dinner

Thats because we have nothing to hide, we are comfortable in our own skins and know we are a bunch of people who know how to listen to our animalistic callings without fear

WickedsDesire -> RE: Are your sexual preferences and user name public information? (7/14/2016 6:56:08 AM)

Wayward5oul What happens online, stays online. That made me laugh..

Crumpets I think has been abducted by aliens lately - but what he says is true - nearly everything he ever has, has be true.

I tend to divide the world into genuine and the rest...for that is simply my way and it can be that clear cut.

My information is my information and I will happily use it.
Sites and other people using my info incur my wrath, whence I can be bothered.

The day approaches sooneth, where sites will be held libel, if they do not do put in reasonable safe guards - not naff get out clauses.
Then individuals doing this...purloining information of other peoples; words and pictures as their own.

    Lookin4Lace
nods a wee bit we are who we are and that is how it should be.

biggest piece of spyware & data mining - invented is face book (which is why I am not on there) - and do not think I am happy with those mad kunts buying instagram and the modifications to site toc...we may haggle out fair usage - but theft is theft and will-full misrepresentation is misrepresentation and plagiarism is plagiarism i could go on.

Diffident -> RE: Are your sexual preferences and user name public information? (7/14/2016 1:05:28 PM)

As someone who values his privacy I am a bit alarmed by the prospect of facial recognition software. It is early days but software already exists that could potentially find all of your social media profiles from a single photograph, including sites like this one. It is seems difficult to stop it from getting better and more widely available in the future.

    Here is a link:Scary stuff

It is probably wise to not allow anything on the internet attached to your name or face that you would not want your boss/family/friends to know about.
