Real0ne -> The Assault Weapon Myth! (6/21/2016 11:12:55 AM)

OVER the past two decades, the majority of Americans in a country deeply divided over gun control have coalesced behind a single proposition: The sale of assault weapons should be banned.

That idea was one of the pillars of the Obama administration’s plan to curb gun violence, and it remains popular with the public. In a poll last December, 59 percent of likely voters said they favor a ban.

But in the 10 years since the previous ban lapsed, even gun control advocates acknowledge a larger truth: The law that barred the sale of assault weapons from 1994 to 2004 made little difference.

Democrats decided to push for a ban of what seemed like the most dangerous guns in America: assault weapons, which were presented by the media as the gun of choice for drug dealers and criminals, and which many in law enforcement wanted to get off the streets.

This politically defined category of guns — a selection of rifles, shotguns and handguns with “military-style” features — only figured in about 2 percent of gun crimes nationwide before the ban.

Handguns were used in more than 80 percent of gun murders each year, but gun control advocates had failed to interest enough of the public in a handgun ban. Handguns were the weapons most likely to kill you, but they were associated by the public with self-defense. (In 2008, the Supreme Court said there was a constitutional right to keep a loaded handgun at home for self-defense.)

Banning sales of military-style weapons resonated with both legislators and the public: Civilians did not need to own guns designed for use in war zones.

Correction: September 21, 2014

A news analysis article last Sunday about the politics around banning assault weapons gave an imprecise and outdated statistic on the use of handguns in killings in the United States. They were used in more than 80 percent of gun murders, not all murders, each year — and in the early 1990s, not in the present.

yeh damn sure dont want civilians to have weapons that can be used in war as tensions rise between them and their overlords!

Sometimes facts fuck up the subterfuge being used by politicians to push their own agenda. Ya', I know, real assault rifles (selective-fire) were outlawed in 1986. Ya', I know that mechanically there is no difference between the 100 year old design of an AR 15 and a hunting rifle except one is a scary black gun. You know, if guns were the problem, then why is gun ownership up 141%, but the homicide rate in the U.S. is actually at a 51-year low according to FBI data.

The top one. It is a goddamn decent gun all the way around, and pretty fuckin accurate. the piece of shit below it is scrap iron.

Feh. The newer Mini-14's are decent, accuracy wise, but the older ones were mediocre. Replace the AR's POS chrome lined barrel with a stainless match barrel and it'll kick the everloving shit out of that Mini-14 all day long.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel about my (Chinese) SKS. Not the worst $75 I ever spent...but close.[:D]

The sten was said to have cost a half-crown ( 25 cents) to make during WW 2 (wartime prices of course)and could be fixed with any old bits of pipe and springs lying around the place. If you held it wrong it was likely to take the first knuckle off a couple of fingers though. Totally innacurate but good for keeping heads down, as long as it didn't jam. The Stirling that followed it was a better weapon though. They are not difficult to make even today and suit a variety of calibres ( depending on the bore of the pipe etc you pick up *smile*).

If you do not know you are too stupid to walk and chew gum. Try asking yourself a very simple question. Which one would you want to take on a seach and destroy mission?
Jesus you are phoquing stupid.

While the numbers of guns in the US community is rising steadily, the number of households that are armed is falling. During the period you have cited, the numbers of armed households in the US fell by approx 50%. The best explanation for this is that declining numbers of gun owners are making multiple purchases of firearms. The gun sales figures you cite do not translate into the gun ownership figures you are claiming.

Your juxtapositioning of the gun ownership rate with the homicide rate without taking into account the rapidly declining levels of gun owners generates a very misleading picture. I have posted this information with cites from original sources several times and can't be bothered searching for them again. I wonder why it is that people continue to ignore this information while they continue to advance spurious and fallacious arguments that favour the gun lobby.

According to who?

According to this University of Chicago analysis, ' Trends in Gun Ownership in the United States, 1972-2014', the % of US households owning a gun is at or near historical lows, and has been trending down for last few decades.

"The household ownership of firearms has declined in recent decades. Table 1 (left side) shows that the
31.0% of households reported having a firearm in 2014, essentially tying with 2010 for the lowest level of
gun ownership in the last 40-some years. This is a decline of about 17 percentage points from the peak
ownership years in 1977-1980. Similarly, Table 1 (right side) indicates that in 2010 and 2014 about 32%
of adults lived households having firearms. This was a decline almost 19 percentage points from an
average of 51.2% in 1976-1982. Based on an earlier analysis of those who refused to say whether or not
there was a firearm in their household,1 the refusers were reallocated as probably living in a household
with a firearm or not living in such a household. This allocation indicates that just under 35% of adults
lived in a household with a firearm in both 2014 and 2010. This represents a decline of over 16
percentage point from the peak average of 51.1% in 1976-1982.
Table 2 shows that in 2014 22.4% of adults personally owned a firearm. This is up slightly from a record
low of 20.6% in 2010. There has been little change from 2006 to 2014. Personal ownership in 2014 is
down 8.1 percentage points from a high of 30.5% in 1985.
One of the main reasons for the decline in household firearm ownership is the decrease in the popularity
of hunting (Table 3). In 2014, only 15.4% of adults lived in households in which they, their spouse, or
both were hunters. This is the lowest level of hunters since the highest level of 31.6% adults being hunters
or married to a hunter in 1977.2
